Discuss riverfront sculpture at proposed site in Riverlife The commission met on the site of the proposed sculpture by Manka and Evans. The site is on the River Edge Parkway, south of the stream, where Fulton Street is planned to be extended towards the river. The artists were on site to discuss the project with the commission, the Foundation, and interested members of the public. No action was taken by the commission. Welcome and Introductions Prehn called the meeting to order at approximately 1:00 p.m. Approve Minutes of June 16, 2019 Meeting Gisselman motioned to approve the minutes the minutes of the June 16th meeting. Foley seconded, and the motion carried 5-0. Foley asked if there were minutes prepared for the November 17th meeting. Lenz said that minutes were not prepared since it was just a tour. Prehn suggested having a record of the meeting. Discussion of Riverfront Public Art and Landscape Plan Prehn introduced DeBoom who is a UW-Madison student working on a pubic arts and landscaping master plan for Wausau. DeBoom said it is a two-semester project, and she is here to visit the site and do background research. Next semester will be mostly design work. Update on Public Sculpture for Riverfront Lenz said that the artists for the Fulton Street sculpture visited the site in September and were able to meet first-hand with some of the Foundation members, as well as commissioners and staff. He thought it was a productive trip for them. He said plan commission and Council will be giving their final approval of the artists and the site. He said that they are on track to complete the sculpture by September 2020, per the contract. The commission talked about the sculpture proposed by the Rotary Club and other potential sculpture locations along the river. Fleming motioned to approve the latest location of the proposed Rotary sculpture, which is located on the north end of 146 Scott Street. Foley seconded, and the motion carried 5-0. Other updates and future agenda items Prehn said she is in discussion with another local Foundation to fund one of the other sculpture proposals. The commission discussed possible locations. Gisselman left the meeting at 1:39 p.m. Lenz showed preliminary landscape plans for the Highway 52 Parkway, west of the freeway. He said there wouldn’t be sculptures proposed as part of the City landscaping project, but art could potentially be added by others in the future. The committee discussed decorative ornamentation versus public art.
