Who are our donors? Every year, Sydney Law School hosts a Prize Giving Ceremony to celebrate the outstanding students who receive a prize, award or scholarship based on their academic merit from the preceding year. Here are the historical details of the donors who graciously gift the law school. Please note that this document provides a summary only, and does not detail the full criteria or eligibility of the funds. CRICOS 00026A Donation name Details of fund Aaron Levine Prize for Founded in 1974 by the Institute of Criminology in the Department of Law to Criminal Law establish a prize in the Faculty of Law in memory of Judge A. Levine. The prize shall be known as the Aaron Levine Prize in Criminal Law and shall be awarded annually on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners of the Faculty of Law to the most proficient student in the subject Criminal Law provided the student's work is of sufficient merit and the student is enrolled in the Bachelor of Laws degree. Allens Linklaters Prize in Established in 2004 by an annual donation from Allens (formerly Allens Real Property Arthur Robinson). Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Undergraduate Committee of Examiners of the Faculty of Law to the student undertaking a Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor who attains the highest mark for the unit of Real Property. Allens Prize in Established in 2004 by an annual donation from Allens Awarded annually on Corporations Law the recommendation of the Undergraduate Committee of Examiners of the Faculty of Law to the student studying a Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor, who attains the highest mark Unit of Corporations Law. AMPLA Prize in Energy Established in 2004 by an annual donation from AMPLA Limited. Awarded & Climate Law annually on the recommendation of the Postgraduate Committee of Examiners of the Faculty of Law to the student who attains the highest mark for the postgraduate unit of study Energy Law. Andrew M Clayton Established in 1980 by the offer from the Partners of Clayton Utz and Memorial Prize ‐ Company, Solicitors, to donate annually the sum of $500 for a prize in the Clayton Utz Faculty of Law. The prize shall be known as the Andrew M. Clayton Memorial Prize ‐ Clayton Utz and may be awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Faculty of Law, to the student who attains the best aggregate mark in the calendar year for the units of study Federal Consituional Law and The Legal Profession, provided that the candidate's work is of sufficient merit and the student is enrolled in the Bachelor of Laws degree or Juris Doctor degree. ANJeL Akira Kawamura Established in 2004 by the offer of an annual donation from Mr Akira Prize in Japanese Law Kawamura, facilitated by the Australian Network for Japanese Law (ANJeL). The Prize is awarded annually on the recommendation of the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Committees of Examiners of the Faculty of Law to the student who attains the highest mark in the undergraduate or postgraduate unit of study, Japanse Law. Ashurst Prize in Established between 1982 and 1991 by the offer of an annual donation from Advanced Taxation Law Ashurst (formerly Blake Dawson Waldron, Solicitors) to establish seven prizes to recognise excellence in studies in areas of law in which the firm practises. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Faculty of Law to the candidate for the degree of Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor who is most proficient in the course Advanced Taxation Law, provided that the candidate's work is of sufficient merit. Bruce Panton MacFarlan Established in 1978 by a gift of $2150 from his wife, daughters and son in Prize memory of their husband and father Bruce Panton Macfarlan, who graduated from the Faculty of Law in 1935, was a lecturer in the Faculty of Law between 1939 and 1951, was appointed to the Bench in 1959 and was Commercial Causes Judge for the Supreme Court of New South Wales between 1966 and 1973. Awarded annually on the recommendation of Board of Examiners of the Faculty of Law to the student who attains the highest mark for the unit of Insolvency Law. Caroline Munro Gibbs Established in 1962 by a bequest from Mrs Sybil Enid Vera Munro Greenwell Prize for Torts of 1000 Pounds to endow a prize or scholarship in the Faculty of Law. Awarded annually for proficiency in the annual examination in Torts provided the student is enrolled in the Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor degrees. E D Roper Memorial Established in 1962 by a donation of 1035 Pounds 9s 3d from the E.D. Roper Prize No. 1 for Equity Memorial Fund to endow two annual prizes to be awarded for proficiency and Corporations Law, on combined performance in Equity and Corporations Law. Prize No. 1 may and No. 2 for Equity and be awarded to the most proficient student in Equity and Corporations Law Corporations Law and Prize No. 2 to the second most proficient student on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners in the Faculty of Law. E M Mitchell Prize for Founded in 1945 by a gift of 100 Pounds from Mrs H.J. Swain to establish a Contracts prize in the Faculty of Law in memory of her brother, E.M. Mitchell, KC. Awarded annually to an undergraduate in law on the results of the examination in Contracts. Edward and Emily Established in 2006 by a donation of $11,000 from Emeritus Professor McWhinney Prize in Edward McWhinney and Emily McWhinney. Professor McWhinney International Law graduated with a Bachelor of Laws from Sydney in 1949. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Undergraduate Committee of Examiners of the Law School to the student who attains the highest mark for the undergraduate unit of study International Law. Edward John Culey Prize Established in 1978 by a gift of Pounds 750 from Miss Dorothy E. Culey and for Proficiency in Real Miss Alma G. Culey in memory of their brother Edward John Culey. Awarded Property and Equity annually on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners of the Faculty of Law to the Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor student who obtains the highest aggregate mark in the subjects Real Property and Equity. Fiona Gardiner‐Hill Prize Sydney Law School’s Fiona Gardiner‐Hill Prize supports promising, high‐ in Corporate Law achieving law students as they undertake their degree at the University of Sydney. Its goal is to provide support to students studying corporate law, a field in which University of Sydney alumna, Fiona Gardiner‐Hill practised passionately for many years. The prize is awarded annually to the most proficient candidate in the units of study 'Takeovers and Reconstructions'; and/or 'Corporate Fundraising'. CRICOS 00026A Donor Details of fund G W Hyman Memorial Founded in 1931 by a gift of approximately 300 pounds from subscribers to Prize in Labour Law a memorial of the late Geoffrey Wellesley Hyman, BA, who while undergraduate in the Faculty of Law gave his life, in his twenty‐fourth year, on 29th January 1930, in trying to save a girls from drowning in the surf at Tamarama Bay, Bondi. The funds were received from the Chairman of the NSW Jewish Memorial Appeal and the President of the Students' Representative Council for establishing a prize, lectureship or scholarship in the Law School. Awarded annually to the candidate completing the degree of Master of Labour Law and Relations who has achieved the highest aggregate mark in the Master of Labour Law and Relations. George and Matilda Founded in 1900 by a gift of 1700 Pounds from Mrs Matilda Duff Harris, of Harris Scholarship No. I Ultimo House, in memory of her husband, George Harris, to be called the for Second Year George and Matilda Harris Scholarship, and to be awarded in the Faculty of Law, for the encouragement of the study of law, under such rules and regulations as the Senate of the University may make from time to time for this purpose. Under this power it has been determined that the scholarship shall be awarded annually, under the following conditions: The George and Matilda Harris Scholarship No. I shall be awarded for general proficiency in Law II. George and Matilda Founded in 1900 by a gift of 1700 Pounds from Mrs Matilda Duff Harris, of Harris Scholarship No. Ultimo House, in memory of her husband, George Harris, to be called the IIA George and Matilda Harris Scholarship, and to be awarded in the Faculty of Law, for the encouragement of the study of law, under such rules and regulations as the Senate of the University may make from time to time for this purpose. Under this power it has been determined that the scholarship shall be awarded annually, under the following conditions: The George and Matilda Harris Scholarship No. IIA shall be awarded for general proficiency in the second year of Juris Doctor. George and Matilda Founded in 1900 by a gift of 1700 Pounds from Mrs Matilda Duff Harris, of Harris Scholarship No. Ultimo House, in memory of her husband, George Harris, to be called the IIB for Third Year of George and Matilda Harris Scholarship, and to be awarded in the Faculty of Combined Law Law, for the encouragement of the study of law, under such rules and regulations as the Senate of the University may make from time to time for this purpose.
