Thisdocumentexploresthenotionof“Czechness”inthesecondvolumeof Smetana’sCzechDancesforpiano,settingthecollectioninthecontextofthelarger nineteenthcenturymovementofEuropeannationalism.Thefirstchapterfocuseson broaddefinitionsandtrendsinnineteenthcenturyEuropeannationalismandtheir specificapplicationtotheCzechlands.Thesubsequentdiscussionincludesahistorical backgroundontheriseofnationalisminBohemia,fromitsoriginsintheCzech linguisticrevivaltothelargerculturalandpolitical“awakening”thattookplace.Czech nationalismwasacomplicatedmovement,comprisingawholesalereinventionofthe cultureandreinterpretationofBohemianhistory,andseveraldifferingideologies consequentlycompetedforCzechpatriots’allegiances.Thischapterwillhelpthe readerfullygraspthecomplexrootsofCzechnationalisminordertobetterunderstand= howthisaffectedtheculturalsceneinlatenineteenthcenturyPrague.
