He was the last remaining member of the distinguished group of U. of M. professors (four of them, including Bryce, later to become deans) who co-founded The Norwegian Explorers in 1948. Bryce was born in 1914 in New Orleans. Because his father worked for the railroad, the family moved often during his early years. Having skipped several grades, at the age of 15 the precocious youth graduated from high school, in El Paso, Texas, where he also first ³%U\FH¶V discovered the world of Sherlock Holmes in the academic vita public library.
