Whipple Dam State Park in Petersburg PA • Bought from the Iroquois in 1754 • Dam built to power a sawmill • Rebuilt by the PA Dept. of Conservation and Natural Resources • Fixed up again by the CCC during The Great Depression • Popular area for ice skating Penn-Roosevelt State Park in Centre County PA • Bought by William Penn from the Juniata tribe and two others • Trees wiped out by lumber harvesting and fire • Bought and turned around by the CCC under the New Deal • Inside the greater Rothrock State Forest o Includes Bear Meadows Natural Area • Used as a work camp for African American men that were unemployed o They built ovens that still stand today Bald Eagle State Park in Centre County PA • Named after Native American chief Woapalanne which translates to “bald eagle” • The old Bald Eagle Creek Path is today’s State Route 150 • Early use as a canal system • Later use in the railroad industry for Curtin Iron Works • Dam built the Joseph Sayers reservoir, named after a WW2 hero of the area • Park includes a beach that is a popular spot in the summer Black Moshannon State Park in Petersburg PA • Called “moss-hanne” by the Native Americans, translates to “moose stream” for the species that used to inhabit there • Features rare wetlands with unique carnivorous plants and orchids • Water is tea colored from tannins in plants, giving it the name “black” • Lumber era cleared out the forest • Turned around by the CCC during The Great Depression • Titled “PA Important Bird Area #33” • High elevation on the Allegheny Plateau makes for popular cross-country skiing Greenwood Furnace State Park in Huntington County • Greenwood Furnace Iron Works was a booming company with the land rich in iron • Created a very dirty village • Gristmill built on the lake in 1842 • Andrew Carnegie turned the town into a railroad industry when the iron was depleted • After its 1800s peak, the town was a ghost town • The Commonwealth of PA turned it into a tree nursery o Iron in soil good for growth • Officially established as part of Rothrock State Forest in 1924 • CCC improved the area and built recreational facilities Poe Valley State Park in Centre County • Features Poe Lake • Rentable cottages for overnight stay • Inside the larger Bald Eagle State Park • Developed by the CCC during the Great Depression • Features Reeds Gap Spur Trail that connects Reeds Gap State Park and Poe Valley park Little Pine State Park in Lycoming County • Specializes in programs for environmental education o Especially their Annual Autumn Fall Festival • Has unique yurts available to stay in • Along Little Pine Creek with a dam that allows boating, fishing, and swimming • Includes the popular two acres of land dedicated solely to hills for sledding .
