In this edition of the Somalia Shelter Cluster factsheet, our focus story is a highlight of Radio Ergo feature story about Shelter assistance to IDPs in Mogadishu city and its environs. The story discloses some very touching statements from some of the 566 beneficiaries of a shelter project implemented by HINNA through Somalia humanitarian pooled funds (SHF). Some of the statements are sampled below. Photo: Typical Emergency shelter constructed for IDPs by HINNA featuring a lockable door. “We were sleeping outdoors, but today we are waking up in our home! It is made of wood and we locals know it as filibiin,” said Naimo Aidurus Jama, a widow, who had been sheltering with her children under a piece of cloth stretched across stick posts. “I slept under this tree with my children for some time but now we feel like we are living in an apartment,” said an excited Mumino Hassan Abdi, who fled from Barire in Lower Shabelle where their small farm was first invaded by locusts and then washed away by floods. Farhiya Hassan Omar, a mother of eight children, also felt relieved to move out of the cramped house of another camp family, where the children and two grandparents lived for two months. Photo:Farhiya Hassan Omar, one of the beneficiaries sitting at the door of her new house/Ahmed Mohamed/Ergo “It was tough at night, my dad used to sleep in the room that was given to us by the host family since he can’t withstand the cold. The rest of us slept outside. But now we thank God,” said Farhiya. The Shelter Cluster partners in Somalia are targeting more than a half a million people with shelter and NFI assistance. These are mainly internally displaced persons living in makeshift shelters in very congested IDP settlements or under trees. Limited funding available for shelter and NFI interventions is main challenge in delivering life-saving shelter and NFI assistance to the population in need.
