Quilting on the Beach 2016 will be an opportunity for you to spend time doing what you love best in a beautiful setting. Join us for a class or two or for the whole week - you’ll have lots to choose from with our schedule of classes and lectures featuring national and local instructors, a quilt show, a shop hop, and even an authentic Luau. This event is scheduled for Feb. 6-13, 2016 and is hosted by Quilt Passions Quilt and Needlework Shop in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. All-day classes will be held from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon and 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm. There will be plenty of free sewing time in our spacious ocean-side conference room at the resort (sewing machines available for rent on request). (Guests Welcome) Cost: $75.00 (does not include lunch) Sunday, February 7th 7:45 am - 8:45 am Get to Know your Rental Machine All Quilting on the Beach participants who are renting a machine any time during the event should attend this orientation. Join us for light breakfast refreshments and a quick make and take as you get comfortable with your rental machine. No charge for all Quilting on the Beach participants. 9:00 am - 4:30 pm Landscape / Pictorial Quilts Curved Machine Pieced with Sue Rasmussen This is a two-day class This class is an introduction to the curved machine piecing technique for landscape and pictorial quilts. In this class, students will cover design techniques, fabric choices, marking, sewing, and pattern development while working directly with fabric. To simplify and allow more time for learning these techniques, this class will use Sue’s popular Na Pali Coast pattern. Sue also will discuss border options and quilting designs to enhance the Na Pali Coast quilt. Students’ personal pictorial designs will be discussed, including how to translate photos or pictures into a pattern. Cost: $140.00 Kit fee: $65.00 Sewing machine required Sunday, February 7th (Continued) 9:00 am - 4:30 pm Dahlia with Mattie Rhoades Haines Add pop to your decor with this great pillow or tablemat - it’s the perfect way to learn how to make the Dahlia in the easy Quiltsmart method. The use of pre-printed interfacing makes applique easy and fun! Cost: $75.00 Kit fee: $60.00 Sewing machine required 9:00 am - 4:30 pm Funky Fish with Barbara Bieraugel Funky time with the humuhumunukunukuapu’a. You will be using your choice of colorful fabrics as you learn to glue-fuse and raw edge machine applique this pretty little fish. Since only your edges are fused down your fish will have dimension and not that flat look. A great technique and a delightful small project! Cost: $75.00 Kit fee: $35.00 Sewing machine required 9:00 am - 4:30 pm Art “Shoe-veau” with Pam Bocko Join Pam Bocko of Pieceful Designs and create your own unique pair of designer shoes. Built on a pair of purchased fabric shoes that you’ll bring with you (Pam will provide suggestions on where to obtain them, and this way you will be sure they fit!), this is a project where you’ll learn embellishing tips to apply fabric, beads, buttons, etc. to make your shoes one (or two) of a kind. When all finished you’ll be stepping out in style! Cost: $75.00 Kit fee: $35.00 No sewing machine needed 6:30 pm Reader’s Theater Under the Hawaiian Quilt Join us for a Reader’s Theater presentation written by local playwright Kitty Powell. Learn the story of the origins of Hawaiian-Style quilting as told in this amusing and poingnant play. Cost: $5.00 (Quilting on the Beach participants) $10.00 (all others) Monday, February 8th 9:00 am - 4:30 pm Landscape / Pictorial Quilts Curved Machine Pieced with Sue Rasmussen (Continued - Day2) 9:00 am - 4:30 pm Watercolor Quilt with Mattie Rhoades Haines Super cute and easy, too! Makes a great tablemat or pillow. A perfect way to learn how to sew squares together with ease, and get perfect matching with no effort. Quiltsmart’s fusible interfacing grids make it happen! Cost: $75.00 Kit fee: $25.00 Sewing machine required 9:00 am - 4:30 pm Free - Form Fabric Collage with Susan Else Loosen up your creative sewing skills with the art of sewn collage. Susan uses this two-dimensional technique as the basis for all of her sculpture, but it can also be used to make flat wall quilts. We will experiment with free-form, intuitive methods as well as more controlled techniques. Kits with lots of goodies to work with will be provided, but feel free to bring a few special fabrics to work into your collage. Cost: $75.00 Kit fee: $50.00 Sewing machine required 9:00 am - 4:30 pm Beaded Orchid Panel with Susan Distel Learn basic bead embroidery techniques as you embellish this beautiful orchid panel. You’ll learn several different beading skills including use of Nymo thread, knotting on top of your work, fringe, coral stitch, and several other bead embroidery stitches. You’ll leave this class with a beautiful piece suitable for framing or finishing into a wall hanging. Cost: $75.00 Kit fee: $30.00 No sewing machine needed Monday, February 8th (Continued) 6:30 pm Off the Wall: Quilting in Three Dimensions Lecture with Susan Else California artist Susan Else uses collaged and quilted fabric to create unusual sculpture. Ranging from wry comments on everyday life to wild imaginary scenes, her work adds a new dimension to the usual flat format of art quilts. Her engaging, vibrantly colored work includes free-standing figures as well as three dimensional dioramas. Built around armatures of foam, wire, and fiberfill, the work incorporates both hand-treated and commercial cloth as well as paint and embellishment. Join us and learn about Susan’s unique quilting journey! Cost: $5.00 (Quilting on the Beach participants) $10.00 (all others) Tuesday, February 9th Tuesday, February 10th 9:00 am - 4:30 pm Machine Quilting on Your Home Sewing Machine - The Basics with Sue Rasmussen This workshop teaches students, while working through several exercises, the basics of free motion machine quilting on a home sewing machine. Beginning with simple shapes, students will work through many quilt designs such as echo quilting, stippling, other “filler” designs, and simple curves, and then onto more complex designs. This class includes discussion of basting techniques, differences in batting, making quilt tops, comparisons of threads and needles, and quilt binding. Students learn to make plant forms, including trees, leaves, vines, and flowers, which can be used to enhance flat quilts as well as in three-dimensional settings. Come join Eva Veltkamp for a half day of instruction creating four coasters featuring the Big Island’s Green Sea Turtle. Using 100% felted wool fabric and embroidery stitches, you will have a wonderful set of coasters to keep or give as a gift. The kit contains all the fabrics, thread and needle needed for this fun and useful hand applique project.
