DESCENDANTS of A.BRA.HAM HAPTONSTALL and RACHEL PRICE Compiled by J. Dean Bacon, 7010 Oglesby Ave., Chicago, Illinois. THE BACON GENEALOGY PREFACE Fortunate. and justly proud is that boy or girl who can look up to his father and mother with a feeling of unqualified and well deserved admiration. If they can also look back with the same pride to their grandfathers and grandmothers, they will feel so much more the satisfaction of being -well-bred. But that boy or girl, man or woman, who knows his or her people for ten or more generations back, and knows them . to have been men and women of great strength of character, should feel a thrill of not only tremendous pride, but also one of tremendous responsibility; for connected with them is the unbroken chain of many noble lineages, and to them come the burden of keeping this chain unbroken and the record unmarred. To You DONALD DEWITT BACON and LOIS LAVONNE BACON comes this heFitage of pride and of responsibility; for since the Family of BACON, whose name you bear, landed in America in 1640, and on back thru the centuries in England, the genealogy is unbroken, until now the line rests on you. And when you can add to this the enviable records of the many allied lines as hereafter recorded, yours is indeed a record to reverence and enjoy. We therefore take great pleasure in dedicating to you this assembled record, and trust and believe that it will be referred to on down thru the years with an ever growing interest. Daniel Webster, at Plymouth, Mass., Dec. 22, 1820, said, "Next to the sense of religious duty and moral feeling, I hardly know what should bear with stronger obligation on a liberal and enlightened mind, than a consciousness of alliance with excellence which has departed; and a consciousness, too, that in its acts and conduct, and even in its sentiments, it may be actively operating on the happiness of those who come after it." JOHN DEAN BACON. DOW PATTERSON BACON. (3) THE BACON GENEALOGY NUMBERING SYSTEM EXPLAINED. The first numbers on the left indicate the generation: Donald & Lois Bacon as 1. Examples: 111-1 Donald De Witt Bacon; 413-8 David Struthers. The next number to the right indicates the relation to direct Ancestry. Examples: 513-1 James Struthers; in direct Ancestral Line of_ the Compiler. 333-7-1 Hon. Francis Murdoch; two generations from common Ancestor. The next numbers to the right, or those to the left of the-indicate the Family number. Examples: 311-4 Dow Patterson BACON; the Family name of the Compiler. 413-8 David STRUTHERS; the third name in the Line of Families. The numbers to the right of the - indicate each childs respective position in the line of birth; also the same for each successive-. · Examples: 153-2-5-7-2 Doris Hayes McMaster; the 2 child of the 7 child of the 5 child of the 2 child of the common Ancestor. Thus 153-2-5-7-2 means that Doris Hayes McMaster is in the 1 generation, or the same as Donald & Lois Bacon; fifth in line from the common Ancestor, James Struthers; a member of the 3 or Struthers Family; Namely, second child of 243-2-5-7 Guy Allan McMaster, who is the seventh child of 333-2-5 David Struthers McMaster, who is t~e fifth child of 423-2 Anne Struthers, McMaster, who is the second child of 513-1 James Struthers the common Ancestor. • The numbers appearing on the right side of the sheet refer to so-called page number of a DIRECT Ancestor of Donald & Lois Bacon and the order of their relative standing, the paternal side having order of preference. It has not seemed feasible to compile an index, other than of common or direct Ancestors, as the Genealogy itself is mainly only an index with no elaborate data supplied for each individual as in many Genealogies. Let us state here that corrections or additions will be welcomed by the Compiler, and will be included in future editions in an Appendix. (5) THE HAPTONSTALL GENEALOGY HAPTONSTALL The name has been defined: HAPT or Haupt,----Exalted chieftain; ON-of----hav ing to do with, or directing; STALL----a high or elevated station or office. Hence HAPTONSTALL----an Overseer, or more particularly one who gives direction to others, and at the same time personally sees that his orders are carried out. This is a word originally introduced in Scandinavia by the Goths and Vandals who over-ran all of Northern Europe about 1150 and left HAPTONSTALL, a vice regent, to look over sub jugated tribes.
