(2) Reference (Survey/Search) Services (a) The library is equipped with an online public access catalog (OPAC) for people who are looking for reading materials. (b) The library staff at the Consultation Corner will help you look for reading materials. Please feel free to ask for help. (c) Also, you can make inquiries by telephone. (d) You can search through the library’s catalog via the Internet. (You can reserve books online as well.) (e) You can view commercial databases, and use a search engine for newspaper articles. (f) You can print the content of commercial databases to the extent permitted by the database copyright holder. (However, there may be some content that cannot be printed at Shinjuku Municipal Library.) You can get more detailed information at the Consultation Corner. (3) Computers for Library Users You can look at Web sites and commercial databases necessary for your research (up to 30 minutes per session). (As a rule, using the computer to listen to CDs, watch DVDs, or print the content of the screen is not permitted.) Please bring your library card or some other form of identifying document verifying your name and address and an applica- tion form to the circulation desk. (4) Public Wireless LAN (Wi-Fi) Service You can connect to the Internet from a designated access point within the library with a tablet or other device you bring with you. Note: A password is required to use this service. For information on the password and the access location within the library, please ask at the circulation desk of the library you’re using. (5) Reading and Copy Service of Digitalized National Diet Library Materials Chuo Library Those registered with a Shinjuku City library can read and/or copy digital versions of National Diet Library materials. (Note: Some restrictions apply.) For more information, please inquire at the Chuo Library Consultation Corner. (6) Photocopy Service (A Fee Is Charged.) Only library materials can be photocopied and used within copyright laws. Photocopying the latest issue of magazines or daily newspapers is not permitted. 2 To Borrow Materials from the Library, Follow the Procedures Below. (1) Applying for a Library Card (a) If you would like to borrow books from the library, you must come to the library and apply for a library card. (b) Those who wish to apply must meet either of the following requirements: 1) You live in metropolitan Tokyo. 2) You work or go to school in Shinjuku City. (c) To apply, you must have some form of public document verifying your name, address, etc. such as a health insurance card, driver’s license, individual number (“My Number”) card, or residence card (photocopy is not acceptable). (Please be assured that any personal information you provide will not be used for any other purpose.) Those who work or go to school in Shinjuku City should also bring some form of document verifying their places of employment or schools (such as company or school ID cards). The library staff at the circulation desk will check your identification. Children of elementary school age or younger are not required to present documents verifying their ad- dresses. (d) Once you complete application procedures, you will be issued a library card. The card can be used at any municipal library in Shinjuku City. (e) If a registered user does not borrow library materials for five years or longer, the registration will become invalid. (f) Please do not lend your library card to other people. 新宿図書館2017_E.indd 6 2017/02/27 10:04 (g) Please notify the staff at the circulation desk if you lose your library card or if there is a change in your address, telephone number, or other registered information. (2) Borrowing Library Materials Bring the library material and your library card to the circulation desk. Alternatively, you can check out materials using the automated checkout machine. Notes: 1. There is a security gate at the library entrance/exit, and an alarm will ring if you take out materials that have not been properly checked out. 2. You are not allowed to lend any borrowed materials to a third party. 3. DVDs are stored in the circulation desk area at the following libraries, so please bring the DVD case to the circulation desk. Please note that you cannot check out DVDs using the automated checkout machine. (Chuo Library: After the FY2017 Chuo Library inventory days) (Shimo-Ochiai Library: From March 2017) (3) Number of Materials That Can Be Borrowed and Loan Period (a) Number of Materials That Can Be Borrowed Books, magazines (as a rule, except the latest issue), and kamishibai materials (pictures for story- 10 telling) in any combination CDs, cassette tapes, and records in any combination 5 Videos (1, if borrowed together with a DVD) 2 DVDs 1 Notes: 1. Please note that some items cannot be checked out, such as certain research materials, maps, and white papers. 2. Records can only be borrowed and returned at Chuo Library’s circulation desk. (b) Loan Period: Two weeks (c) Renew/Extend Loan Period: Books and kamishibai materials (pictures for storytelling) can be renewed one time only for an additional two weeks from the date you complete the procedure if they are not on reserve for someone else. To renew/ extend your loan period, complete the designated procedures during your loan period (excluding the date you checked out the materials). The loan period cannot be extended for magazines, audiovisual materials, and items borrowed from the metropol- itan library or libraries in other cities. Note: If you keep library materials past the due date for eight days or longer, you will not be able to borrow or reserve new materials until you return them. In addition, please note that if you have materials reserved and do not return library materials within one week after a reminder postcard is sent, your reservation will be canceled. (4) Returning Library Materials Please return materials to the library by bringing them to the circulation desk during library hours. Any materials you borrow from a municipal library in Shinjuku City can be returned to your local municipal library. Books, magazines, and kamishibai materials (pictures for storytelling) may be returned in the book drop at the library entrance. However, you cannot return audiovisual materials and materials accompanying CDs and DVDs via the book drop because doing so may damage them. Please be sure to return them directly to the circulation desk during library hours. Please bring records to the Chuo Library circulation desk. If library materials are soiled, damaged (through water staining, etc.), or lost, you may be required to pay for those materials. (5) Reservation (Request) Service (a) If the library material you wish to borrow is not on the shelf, please fill out a reservation card and take it to the circulation desk. (b) You can reserve up to 10 books, kamishibai materials, and/or magazines (in any combination). The library will do its utmost to fulfill your request, such as by borrowing the requested materials from other municipal libraries in the city, libraries in other cities, or from the metropolitan library. (c) Audiovisual materials are limited to those that are listed in the catalogs of municipal libraries in the city. You can reserve up to five CDs, cassette tapes, and records (in any combination), two videos, or one DVD at one time. (d) Only library-card holders can reserve materials from Shinjuku municipal libraries by telephone or via the Internet. (e) You will be notified when the material(s) you reserved is available for pickup. Please specify how you would like to be notified (e.g., by e-mail or telephone or that no notification is necessary). 新宿図書館2017_E.indd 7 2017/02/27 10:04 Please note that if you do not pick up the material(s) you reserved within seven days (library holidays not included) after the material(s) becomes available, your reservation will be cancelled. E-mail can be transmitted during library holidays as well. Please be sure to check the hours of the library where you will be picking up material(s). Please specify how you would like to be notified (e.g., by e-mail or telephone or that no notification is necessary). E-mail can be transmitted during library holidays as well. Please be sure to check the hours of the library where you will be picking up material(s). Note: If you have reserved material(s) listed in the catalogs of the Children’s Library, you can arrange to pick them up even after Children’s Library hours (6 p.m.) at the Chuo Library circulation desk on the first floor (except on Sundays and national holidays). In this case, please specify that you would like to pick up the material(s) at Chuo Library when reserving material(s).
