Runswick Bay Coastal Protection Scheme Project Overview A new coastal defence scheme is proposed at Runswick Bay, North Yorkshire to reduce the risk of erosion to the existing concrete and masonry sea walls to the east and north east of the village. The scheme involves surface repairs to the existing sea wall and the placement of rock armour at the toe of the seawall. Existing Condition • Undermining through wave action scouring material below the concrete wall • Damage to the existing concrete works • Significant erosion at connections to the cliff Strategic and Legislative Framework The Runswick Bay Coastal Strategy was developed during 2013/14, and was approved in May 2015, to identify the preferred strategic approach for managing flood and coastal erosion risk to the coastal frontage extending from Thorndale Shaft (to the north) and Sandsend Ness, North Yorkshire, a length of approximately 7 kilometres. It includes the communities of Runswick Bay Village and the smaller settlements of Port Mulgrave and Kettleness. The length of coastline covered by the Strategy is included within the River Tyne to Flamborough Head Shoreline Management Plan (SMP2).
