Polymaths in the News: MARK RONSON Every week, we post a story about a public figure who's been described as a polymath. This week's subject is a British designer whose work marries art with science. August 18, 2015 "There will also be sublime moves on the ones and twos from chart-conquering musical polymath Mark Ronson..." - Island Echo, August 17, 2015, describing a September music festival on the Isle of Wight If you don't know English musician and producer Mark Ronson, you know his work. He wrote, with Bruno Mars, Jeff Bhasker, and Philip Lawrence, "Uptown Funk," produced the single, and appeared in the ubiquitous video. The song spent 14 straight weeks at the top of the American charts, seven at the top of the British charts, and 15 atop Canada's. The song set a record for number of streams in one week in the U.S., 4.8 million. At its peak, it was earning $100,000 per week from streaming via Spotify alone. Why is Mark Ronson a polymath? We were curious, too. Chalk it up to his versatility as a musician: he writes, sings, DJs, plays guitar, and produces. His own last three albums have peaked at no. 2, 2, and 1 respectively on the UK Album chart, and he's produced Grammy-winning albums by Amy Winehouse and Adele. And though it doesn't boost his polymathic score, it probably doesn't hurt his reputation as a 'math about town that he was also named by GQ magazine one of the 50 best-dressed British men for 2015.
