The recent announcement of the discovery of gravitational waves provides such an example. A collision between black holes caused space itself to become distorted, much as a dropped stone does to the smooth surface of water. The ripples spread outwards and about a thousand million years later we are able to detect that very diluted disturbance. We can imagine Einstein saying “I told you so” and we can also look forward to other such events being detected and a whole new method of looking at the universe becoming available. From both a scientific and engineering standpoint we have seen a pivotal moment in the history of human achievement. One aspect of this is a reminder that the universe in which we find ourselves is far more subtle and counter intuitive than we could guess. On both the small scale of quantum physics and the large scale of relativity we find that experimental evidence points to some strange notions, beyond any expectations based on our everyday experience of the world around us. We are led into new and transforming visions and into a sense of humble admiration. This scientific process depends on a proper examination of the evidence without making prior assumptions or following any prejudices. The Easter story may also seem to defy our everyday understanding and yet it has provided inspiration and meaning for countless people for far longer than general relativity has been appreciated. Just as in science, the evidence must be gathered and then considered without prior prejudice. A part of that evidence is the gospel accounts of the few days before and after the crucifixion of Jesus. The four gospels provide different angles on this but each of them can be read with an open mind allowing us to come to develop our own conclusions. One of the real joys of science is in making it a part of oneself and using it to motivate further action and understanding – the same is true of the Easter story. Details of services following the days of Holy Week and Easter may be found elsewhere in this magazine. The magazine sends its readers very best wishes for Easter. Gerald South 16 TATSFIELD PARISH COUNCIL The start to 2016 has been unseasonably wet, but that hasn't dampened the spirit of the Parish Council to continue to pay attention to matters that affect all of us. The heavy rain has at times caused areas of localised flooding - down Church Lane and in the centre of the village - and we have addressed these issues with Tandridge District Council or owners of the land where appropriate. You will have noticed that the work on the paths across the central island in the village has been completed. The paths were originally laid 79 years ago, leading the way to a bus shelter erected on the island to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George the Fifth. Planning: the proposed extension at 27 Paynesfield Road about which we had reservations last month has been refused by Tandridge. The other one we had problems about – Green Pastures in Greenway – has been approved, as was the 15 Paynesfield Road extension to which we had no objection. The District Council has also refused planning permission for two other proposals to which we did object. One was for ground floor extensions and rooms in the roof space at Libra in Ricketts Hill Road. The other was for an outbuilding at Trevena in Chestnut Avenue which the applicants wanted to use for ballroom dancing practice. Some of us have been looking at the detailed proposals contained in Tandridge District Council’s consultation on the future Local Plan and we will have submitted a response by the time you read this.
