Newsflash Edition 37: Friday 9Th July 2021

Newsflash Edition 37: Friday 9th July 2021 Droylsden Academy is a good school IN THE NEWS THIS WEEK Congratulations Congratulations to Andrew Chen from Year 9 who passed his Grade 4 Piano Exam this week. Not only did Andrew pass, but he passed with Distinction, the highest award possible, a real achievement. Andrew is already working towards his Grade 5 Exam and we are looking forward to continued success in the future! Miss Burgess has been extremely impressed with how all the Year 9 Musicians have handled their recent E1 assessments, with students preparing and formally recording their performances last week. The photographs below show J-Lee Atherton, Brooke Plant and Jay Murray on drums, vocals and guitar respectively. Congratulations and well done to all of you on your hard work, you have shown genuine ability and real professionalism! Great learning through politeness, honesty and hard work Final of the National Reading Champions Quiz. Fresh from their success as regional winners, the Droylsden Academy Team, primed, practised and ready, competed in the final of the National Reading Champions Quiz this week. The team were competing against other regional winners, the ‘crème de la crème’ of student readers from schools across the country. The quiz followed the same format as the heats with 10 rounds of 10 questions, many read out by special guest authors such as Charlie Higson, David Baddiel, Anthony Horowitz and Cressida Cowell. The team chose ‘Fairytales and Folklore’ as their specialist round as they had done so well with ‘Myths and Legends’ in the regional heats. Once again, the team did the Academy proud and finished in 13th place having thoroughly enjoyed their journey from the qualifying rounds through to the final! Well done to Molly Nash, Kwon Leong, Ikram Gudeta and Brogan Williams, we are really proud of you! The letter below is from Angela Rayner MP who came into the Academy to meet the team following on from their success in the regional heats. Great learning through politeness, honesty and hard work Food and Nutrition In Food and Nutrition, Year 8 have been adding the final designs to their ‘Celebration Cakes’. There were some wonderful designs which would not look out of place in the finest Patisserie! The photographs below show Brogan Williams, Chemen Omar and Rose Taylor all hard at work on their intricate designs. Meanwhile, the photographs below show Amy Lea, Marliatou Bah, Jesse Eastham, Callum Gilder, Tevon Alder-Berryman and Cayden Edwards, from Year 7, all making their own chosen meals based on information and guidance from the ‘Eat Well Guide’. Great learning through politeness, honesty and hard work Art and Photography Miss Hickman was delighted with the miniature posed ‘action shots’ taken by her Year 8 Photography Group and has submitted the following photos for inclusion in this week’s Newsflash. Harry Belfield Thomas Weaver Alfie Wier Cameron Sheehan Chris Proctor Great learning through politeness, honesty and hard work Jace Kennedy Wahib Mohamad Jaaziah Cowan Ellie Lucas Oscar Young Great learning through politeness, honesty and hard work The following clever, creative and striking edits were submitted by Robert Hill and Rosie McCormick from year 10. Finally, Rachel King drew this wonderful cartoon self- portrait this week in her online Art lesson. The STEM Club Garden Although Year 7 students were isolating and learning from home last week, Miss Patel and Miss McCann tended the garden, weeded the weeds that needed weeding and potted the plants that needed potting! The tomatoes got re-homed in bigger pots and the peppers, raspberries, herbs, rhubarb and cauliflowers all got planted in the planters. Some of the seeds that the students planted have also started to grow! Great learning through politeness, honesty and hard work Miss Patel and Miss McCann were really looking forward to the STEM Club students returning this week to help them with the weeding and planting and to show them how much the garden had changed in just a few days! STUDENT OF THE WEEK Congratulations to Kate O’Donnell from Year 10 who has been nominated as Student of the Week. Kate has been nominated by the Science Department as she has worked really hard all year, both in class and in the online live lessons too. Kate always contributes to class discussions and is never afraid to ask for help when she isn’t sure of something. She has also done well in her recent set of Science Pre-Public Examinations which is testament to her commitment, hard work and positive attitude. Miss Patel is really proud of you Kate, keep it up! THE DROYLSDEN ACADEMY ALUMNI NETWORK We are currently establishing an ‘Alumni network’ for Droylsden Academy. If you are a former students of the Academy, or, indeed, either of the predecessor schools, Droylsden High School for Girls or Littlemoss High School for Boys, and you would like to keep in touch or feel that you can support us with our aims, as stated below, then we'd love to hear from you! Great learning through politeness, honesty and hard work The aims of the Alumni network: To set up cross-curricular projects where Alumni will work with students to help them better understand what follows school and, in particular, the world of work (including the understanding that plans change and don't always come to fruition). To help students understand that there is a whole range of employment opportunities of which they may not yet be aware. To create links between the 'Droylsden' community (locally, regionally, nationally, internationally) To establish a tradition where our present and former students achievements are celebrated. If you're a former student and would like to learn more about the proposed network then please email Mr Jackson, our Director of Character and Life Skills at: [email protected] Thank you! THE IMPORTANCE OF LATERAL FLOW TESTS With increasing Covid infection rates across the country, and in particular in Greater Manchester and the North West, it is crucial that we all test ourselves regularly using the kits provided. Please, please, please ensure that your child tests him or herself every Sunday and Wednesday, in line with our school procedures, and then records their result through the Academy website. It is really important that all results are recorded on both the Academy Google Reporting Tool and through the NHS reporting website. We need to keep ourselves and our families safe and we owe it to everyone in our community to test ourselves regularly. REMINDERS AND MESSAGES An important message from the NSPCC For the first time, people under the age of 18 who are concerned that a nude or inappropriate photograph of them is online, or could potentially end up there, can now flag up the content using the Report Remove tool on the NSPCC's Childline service's website. https://www.childline.org.uk/info-advice/bullying-abuse-safety/online-mobile-safety/remove-nude- image-shared-online/ Great learning through politeness, honesty and hard work If a picture or video has already appeared online, they can share the URL and the charity will examine the images. If the pictures break the law, the IWF will work to have them removed. If the content has not yet appeared online but a person is worried it might, the charity can create a digital fingerprint for the picture, known as a hash, which will be shared with tech companies and law enforcement around the world to help prevent it from being uploaded and shared.
