A pleasant 25 minute drive from Auckland, this picturesque rural area offers all visitors a sensational array of attractions and activities. 3 The Region Kumeu, Waimauku and Muriwai Valley Kumeu Kumeu Village and the surrounding countryside of Waimauku and Muriwai Valley plays host to the Kumeu Wine Country wine trail. This area is steeped in history with wineries in the area dating back to the 1930s when families from Croatia established homes and livelihoods just as they had in their homeland. This infl uence remains strong, with many of these families still living locally and producing world class wines. The wineries range in size from boutique artisan winemakers to some of the best known names in wine, offering diverse and interesting wine styles. Some of the wineries concentrate their efforts producing wines from the unique vineyards of Kumeu Wine Country; whilst others produce wines from the other reputed grape growing regions such as Marlborough, Hawke’s Bay, Gisborne, Wairarapa and Central Otago.
