To access FIRS via voice or a Telecommunications Device for the Deaf (TDD), call 1-800-877-8339. Fire Alarm System The following is a step-by-step explanation of the notification sequence that will occur in the event of a fire alarm or other emergency condition that would require evacuation of all or part of the Main State Complex. • “Whoop” Sound—Five (5) seconds of a slow “whoop “ sound will be emitted from speakers on the specific floors that must be evacuated. • Voice Message 1. A prerecorded message will state: “May I have your attention please. May I have your attention please. A fire has been reported in the building that may affect your floor. Please walk to the nearest exit and evacuate the building. Do not use the elevators.” This message will repeat until evacuation is completed, or 2. A nonrecorded, situation-specific message will identify the nature and extent of the emergency and will broadcast specific directions and pertinent information to affected floors or the entire building, as necessary. • Strobe Lights—Will flash continually in the corridors of specifically affected floors or the entire building, if necessary, until evacuation has been accomplished. • Horns—In addition to the strobes, horns will continually sound in floor-specific mechanical areas until evacuation has been accomplished. There are no speakers located in the mechanical areas for broadcast messages! • Public Address (PA) System—The PA system may be used to broadcast information to specific floors or throughout the building. The “all clear” message will be broadcast using the PA system when there is no longer an emergency situation. The new alarm system may be activated in the following ways: • Manual alarms (“pull station”) • Sprinkler system water-flow detectors • Heat detectors • Smoke detectors The system employs a concept of “selective” evacuation. This means that when an alarm is initiated, only the affected or potentially affected floors will be evacuated, as opposed to the entire building. For example, an alarm is activated indicating a problem on the third floor. A whoop sound, voice evacuation instructions, and strobes/horns will be activated on the third floor, as well as on the floors above (fourth) and below (second) the area in question.
