Tutorial: Calculating Volume of Empty Space in Creo By: Matthew Jourden Brighton High School Brighton, MI When calculating volume of empty space on a CAD software, the user needs to understand that CAD software can only calculate solid material, since empty space in infinite. The following steps will go thru how to calculate empty space of container. 1. Design the object as a solid. 2. Select Analysis Tab > Measure > Pop Up Menu will appear Length: Select an Save: Creates Feature on Model Tree Edge to find its Length Volume: Select 1+ object to see volume Distance: Select two points, edges, or surfaces to see value. NOTE: Selection Area: Select 1+ Surfaces to see total Area shows as the crow flies. Angle: See the degrees Diameter/Radius: Select Hole/Arc between selections to see size 3. Select Volume Shows Total Volume Based on selected units (i.e in3) 4. Select the Save Icon Save Icon 5. Set Name of Measurement (i.e Vol_Before_Shell) > Press OK > Feature will be added to Model Tree > Middle Mouse Button to Exit the Measurement Tool Note: Creo File saving conventions (No Spaces) 6. Select Model Tab > Select Shell Tool > Select the Surface to be the open end of the object > Type in Wall Thickness > Green Check Set Wall Thickness NOTE: The shell will wrap around any part of the object. The more complex the geometry is the more the corners need to be rounded in order to account for the wall thickness. Add Boss Section View 7. Select Analysis Tab > Measurement > Volume > Save > Name: Vol_After_Shell > Ok > This will add the Feature to Model Tree Name Volume for Model Tree Select Volume Tool Model Tree 8. Subtract Values: Vol_Before_Shell – Vol_After_Shell = Total Empty Space of the Object NOTE: If User Edit Definition the Saved Measurement Feature on the Model Tree the volume number will show on the part from that point going back to the beginning of the part .
