Sonny Curtis

SONNY CURTIS Sonny Curtis was born in Meadow, Texas a small town between Lubbock and Brownfield. Because of his contribution to the music industry The Meadow City Council named a street in his honor. Sonny is probably remembered first because of his close association with Buddy Holly and being a member of The Crickets. Sonny Curtis was from a musical family performing with his two brothers on KSEL Radio as The Curtis Brothers and then on KDAV Radio with Ben Hall. Sonny‘s first love was country music singing, playing fiddle and guitar. In 1957 he toured with country singer Slim Whitman and then joined The Phillip Morris Country Music Show. He began recording in 1958 but it wasn’t until 1966 that he had his first charted single “My Way Of Life” on Viva 602 reaching #49 on the country charts. A few of the notable songs written by Sonny Curtis include: “Walk Right Back” #7 Pop 1961 for The Everly Brothers, “I Fought The Law” #9 Pop Bobby Fuller (West Texas), and co-writer on “I’m No StrangerTo The Rain” #1 Country Song in 1989 for the late Keith Whitley. Sonny fared well with his own recordings charting 13 in the top 100 country with one “Good Ol’ Girls” reaching #15. He wrote and sang the theme “Love Is All Around” for The Mary Tyler Moore Show plus it reached the top 30 in the country charts. After seeing the movie “The Buddy Holly Story” he tried to set the record straight writing/recording “The Real Buddy Holly Story” on Electra 46616 which broke into the top 40. In 2000 Sonny was still touring with The Crickets. .
