Academic choices. Students have four distinct choices to complete their undergraduate education. Oxford College Emory is alone among top research universities in offering two academically equivalent but environmentally distinct options for entering students. Founded in 1836, Emory College began in a small town about thirty-eight miles east of Atlanta. Thanks to the generosity of the Candler family, in 1915 Emory College moved its campus inside the city of Atlanta. The university decided to keep the original campus and while Oxford’s history is rich, today Oxford College is an academically equivalent but environmentally different opportunity for first and second year students. Students may apply to Oxford College to spend their first two years in a small- town/suburban setting. Students choose to attend Oxford because of the emphasis on teaching, personal interaction with professors, abundant opportunities for leadership development, small community setting, and relationship with Emory University. Oxford enrolls about 950 total students. After completing their two years at Oxford, students continue to Emory’s Atlanta campus to complete their baccalaureate degrees at Emory College, the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, or Goizueta Business School. Emory College of Arts and Sciences As entering first-years, students may choose to apply to Emory College, the four-year undergraduate division of Emory University in Atlanta, which offers an innovative, rigorous liberal arts education along with the resources and facilities a student would expect from a major research university in a major metropolitan area. Emory College consists of approximately 5,700 students, with a first-year class of 1,350. Emory College offers more than 71 majors and 57 minors, nine combined bachelor’s/master’s degrees, and 10 preprofessional programs. Upon junior year, whether a student attends Oxford College or Emory College, additional academic choices await. Students may take their pick from the numerous programs at Emory College; they may apply to the Goizueta Business School to earn a bachelor of business administration; or they may transfer to Emory’s Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing to earn a bachelor of science in nursing. Goizueta Business School For the junior year, students interested in business may apply to Goizueta Business School to earn a bachelor of business administration (BBA). At Goizueta, BBA students augment their 3 business study with group projects, presentations, business research, mentoring programs, and job shadowing with professionals in the Atlanta community. Goizueta provides a practical working-world enhancement to the liberal arts knowledge base. Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing Emory and Oxford students applying to the BSN first degree program will automatically be admitted to the School of Nursing if they meet the following requirements: o Complete the 60-credit hours of prerequisites at Emory or Oxford College o Earn a “C” or better in the prerequisite courses o Submit an online application (only the application - no supporting documents are required) by January 15th of the year they wish to begin the nursing program Emory and Oxford College students who meet these requirements will not need to submit an application fee, a resume, a statement of purpose, or recommendations. 2. Liberal arts. A broad education prepares a student for life. A liberal arts education prepares the student for a life of learning by emphasizing the ability to connect ideas; to inquire, learn, and adapt; and to communicate well in verbal and written communications. A student receives a broad general education along with a thorough knowledge of their major(s). Emory University’s curriculum is marked by a collaborative spirit; class discussions inform lessons and group projects maximize learning. Interdisciplinary learning draws upon multiple areas of study to bring new perspectives to light. Emory learning is enhanced by a global perspective, which students can receive on campus or abroad. Because students don’t need to choose a major until the end of their sophomore year, they may enter the university with an open mind, free to explore new ideas and numerous academic options. 3. Size. We’re small with big school resources. The average class size at Emory College is 25 students, and 79 % of classes have fewer than 30 students. Some popular introductory classes will grow to 80 or more, but these are rare. When classes do grow large, the students are divided into groups of about 15 for weekly discussion sessions or labs that are led by instructors. In addition, Emory College offers seminar-style classes of 15 students at the first-year level. The average class size at Oxford College is 20 students, and 86 % of classes have fewer than 30 students. Emory College and Oxford College offer the attention and nurturing a student would expect from a traditional liberal arts college and the resources, opportunities, and broad curriculum of a research university. The university is composed of nine schools and numerous centers devoted to the study of the sciences and humanities and to actively improving human well-being. In addition to Emory 4 College and Oxford College, there are professional schools of business, law, medicine, nursing, public health, and theology; and the graduate school of arts and sciences. Emory enjoys affiliations with renowned centers and organizations that give our students access to some of the best researchers and resources in the world. These include the Emory Healthcare system and its network of hospitals, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, The Carter Center, the Winship Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, and the Center for Behavioral Neuroscience. In addition, students can utilize Emory’s Michael C. Carlos Museum, which houses 15,000 works of art from six continents, as well as Emory University Libraries, a five-library system that houses 3 million volumes. Teaching-Research Balance We believe that teaching and research are not mutually exclusive; rather, they can be intertwined to create an exceptional learning experience. While Emory faculty are at the forefront of current research and scholarship in their fields, their commitment is first and foremost to teaching. Student Research Research isn’t only performed by graduate students and faculty, and it’s not just in the sciences. Nearly 50 % of undergraduates participate in research with graduate students or faculty, offering our students more variety and freedom of study within numerous areas of concentration. To graduate with honors, students may conduct original research in their major. Internships More than 2,000 opportunities are available in and near Atlanta, and others are available across the country. Internships complement liberal arts learning with real-world experience. 4. Current press. Exciting things are always happening at Emory. Renowned poet, Guggenheim Fellow, and Associate Professor of English and Creative Writing, Jericho Brown won top honors from the Poetry Society of America for two of his poems. Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Mathematics, Ken Ono, specializes in number theory and has unlocked breakthrough theories about partition numbers. His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama was named Presidential Distinguished Professor at Emory University, the first university appointment accepted by the 1989 Nobel Peace Laureate and leader of the Tibetan exile community. Greg Berns is the first scientist to put dogs awake in an MRI machine. His research revealed the inner workings of the canine brain for the first time and led to the writing of his book How Dogs Love Us. His research revealed how dogs empathize with human emotions, how they love us, and why dogs and humans share one of the most remarkable friendships in the animal kingdom. Professor Berns also teaches undergraduate classes with undergraduates involved in his research labs. Emory has been honored with the Presidential Award for General Community Service, the highest federal recognition a university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service learning, and civic engagement. 5 Emory is on the leading edge of healthcare, successfully treating four Ebola patients in the summer of 2014 and working in close partnership with the CDC to stop the spread of the infectious disease. 5.
