They make for an interesting mix and I am sure that the voting will be keenly contested. • 17 year old Nathan Brill won the Victorian U18 10km Road Walk at Middle Park on Saturday in a PB time of 42:33. This time actually bettered Troy Sundstrom's Australian U18 Road Walk Record. Alas, we did not know in advance that Nathan was intending to have a go and hence did not have the required 3 watches in place. However, with 5 months to go in the calendar year, he is sure to have plenty more opportunities and it is only a matter of time now unti he gets his name in the books for this record. • 40 year old Kelly Ruddick won the VRWC Open Women's 10km roadwalk championship on Saturday in a PB time of 46:15, bettering her own pending W40 World Masters record by some 18 seconds. Kelly just gets better every time she steps on the start line and is amongst our best Open walkers. • 11 year old Mikhala Hodgestook bronze in the Victorian U20 10km roadwalk championship on Saturday, her PB time of 1:05:36 breaking her own VRWC U12 club record. Mikhala shows no fear in attempting the longer distances and continues to set the bar high for those who come after her. • Margaret Beaumont continued her W75 records rampage with yet another great performance on Saturday, her 20km time of 2:57:00 setting new Australian Masters, Victorian Masters and VRWC W75 records. As usual, you can cast your vote at http://www.vrwc.org.au/vrwcWOW.php. WHAT'S COMING UP Next week sees our final points races for the winter season and what better way to finish than with a Handicap Start. That way, whoever finishes first in each Open or U15 race automatically wins the Handicap. It is also a Prizes Day with prizes on offer for each handicap winner. As usual, the donation of any additional prizes for the table is always appreciated. Walkers Note: We can only allocate Handicap Start Times to those walkers who have raced over that distance or a comparable distance during the last 12 months. No entries for the Open and Under 15 handicap races will be accepted after 1.45pm as we need plenty of time pre-race to sort out the start times. Later entries may race but will not be able to participate in the Handicap event. Saturday 10th August 2013, Middle Park VRWC EVENTS: Entries close for handicap start events at 1.45pm sharp. 2.15pm 8km Handicap start Open 2.15pm 4km Handicap start Open 2.15pm 4km Handicap start Under 15 2.45pm 2km Handicap Under 12 2.45pm 1km Handicap Under 9 A further reminder that entries close this Friday evening for the Australian Roadwalk Championships which will be held in Tasmania on Sunday 1st September. The entry panel is found at https://sitedesq.imgstg.com/meetsregform/index.cfm? fuseaction=display_event_registration_step1&MeetID=1047&OrgID=887. So far, we have 97 entries but there is always room for more! And finally, entries for the Australian Masters Games, which will be held in Geelong from 5-12 October, close tomorrow, Wednesday 7th August, See http://www.australianmastersgames.com. AV AND VRWC CHAMPIONSHIPS, MIDDLE PARK, MELBOURNE, SATURDAY 4 AUGUST The annual Victorian Roadwalk Championships were held on Sunday morning at Middle Park in perfect conditions - cool, overcast and still. This was a huge change to Saturday where Victoria experienced the worst of our winter weather - it is always a case of timing and on this occasion, the timing was perfect. With VRWC club championships also on offer, it was pleasing to see 70 walkers in action. Terry Swan has loaded some 130 action photos from the day to our VRWC photo Gallery - check it out at http://www.vrwc.org.au/coppermine/thumbnails.php?album=144 The Victorian 30km championship saw Chris Erickson win his fourth winter season title, following on from his wins over 10km, 15km and 20km. In what was his final race before flying out to Moscow for the World Championships tomorrow, he strolled through the first 20km before putting the pedal down and powering through to his final time of 2:22:16. The only other finisher was Terry O'Neill who worked hard for his 3:10:54. AV 30km Open Men 1. Chris Erickson ATE 0:50:18 1:37:59 2:22:16 2. Alas, a lack of notification meant that the required 3 watches were not in place but I am sure that Nathan will put that to rights before the end of the year, given his rapidly improving form. Others to excel included Kyle Swan (huge PB of 22:54 for U16 5km), Jesse Osborne (45:07 for 10km), Mikhala Hodges (PB of 1:05:36 for 10km at 11 years of age!) and Rebecca Henderson (15:20 for U14 3km), AV U20 10km Men 1. Natalie Laurie, finally back after a few horror years of injury, was second to Kelly with her own PB of 51:43. Our U12 and U9 club championships went to Rebecca Henderson, Nikola Mandic, Hayley Woolfe and Marcus Byron. Quite a few our the U12 walkers had earlier walked in the Victorian U14 3km championships so for them, it was a big day's work. VRWC 10km Open Women Club Championship - Mabel Robinson Trophy 1.
