The 24-room Georgian Revival mansion was built in 1905 and served as the Lincolns' family home until the death of Mary Lincoln Beckwith in 1975. The mansion has been renovated and preserved by a local organization, Friends of Hildene. The home is decorated and furnished with pieces from five Lincoln homes. Hildene's formal gar- dens have been restored to their original beauty, and many of the original plantings remain. Other points of interest on the premises include an 1822 schoolhouse, an observatory designed by Robert Todd Lincoln, an Aeolian Pipe Organ in working order, servants' quarters, a carriage house and polo fields.
