A European Flavour at the Oscars and Golden Globe Awards

A European flavour at the Oscars and Golden Globe awards It is awards' time in the United States, and European films have proved they travel well across the Atlantic: 11 EU-funded films in the Oscar nominations and 7 in the Golden Globe awards. This year the MEDIA programme celebrates its 25th anniversary at the service of Europe's audiovisual culture. Sony Pictures Classics Picture from the film Son of Saul 18 nominations have been announced for 11 MEDIA-supported films at the Oscar awards and 7 competed at the Golden Globe awards' ceremony, with one of them, Son of Saul, bringing home the Best Foreign Language Film award. These films have received a total support of €4.46 million from the European Commission's Creative MEDIA Europe programme and originate from 11 countries: Hungary, France, Turkey, Germany, Denmark, Switzerland, Italy, Ireland, Norway, Finland and Sweden. Last year, the Creative Europe programme counted with 10 Oscar nominations for 6 films, and for a total of €3 million. Oscars The British co-production Carol, directed by Todd Haynes, lead the European delegation with 6 nominations: Best Adapted screenplay, Actress in a leading role (Cate Blanchett), Actress in a supporting role (Rooney Mara), Cinematography, Costume Design and Original score. Irish coproduction Brooklyn, directed by John Crowley will have three chances to bring an Oscar home in the categories Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actress in a Leading Role (Saoirse Ronan). In the category "Best Foreign Language Film", three out of five nominated films are European. Tobias Lindholm's A War and Deniz Gamze Ergüven's Mustang will face the tough competition of László Nemes' Golden Globe award winnerSon of Saul, which appears as the frontrunner. In the category Documentary Feature, The Look of Silence as well as Amy will try to scoop an Oscar. Finally, Swedish production The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared directed by Felix Herngren, multi-award winner Youth by Paolo Sorrentino, animation Shaun the Sheep by Mark Burton and Richard Starzack as well as Andrew Haigh's 45 Years are also in the running, respectively for Make-Up and Hairstyling, Original Song, Animated Feature Film and Best Actress in a Leading Role (Charlotte Rampling). Many European talents will be in the spotlight during the 2016 ceremony: - Saoirse Ronan (Irish – Brooklyn) and Charlotte Rampling (British – 45 years) for Best Actress in a Leading Role. - Alician Vikander (Swedish – The Danish Girl) and Kate Winslet (British – Steve Jobs) for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. - Eddie Redmayne (British - The Danish Girl) and Michael Fassbender (German-Irish – Steve Jobs) for Best Actor in a Leading Role. - British Actors Tom Hardy (The Revenant) and Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies) for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. - Lenny Abramson (Irish –Room) for Best Director. The Oscar awards ceremony will be held in Hollywood on 28 February 2016. Golden Globes In total, 7 MEDIA-supported films were competing at the Golden Globe awards' ceremony on January 10th, 2016. EU-supported Son of Saul brought the Best Foreign Language Film award home to Europe. Jury Grand Prize at the 2015 Cannes festival, László Nemes' compelling drama is the first Hungarian film to secure a Golden Globe. 6 other EU-supported films were nominated: European Film Awards' winners Youth (Italy)and The Brand New Testament (Belgium), Lux Prize winner Mustang (Turkey, France, Germany), as well as The Fencer (Finland, Estonia, Germany), Carol (United Kingdom, United States), and Shaun the Sheep (United Kingdom). The Creative Europe programme celebrated another European success as Room scooped the Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture award for the US's Brie Larson. The film's script was written by Dublin-born Emma Donoghue (who also wrote the novel), while it was developed and co- produced by Irelands Element Pictures and directed by Lenny Abrahamson. Background information Since its creation in 1991, the MEDIA programme committed €2.4 billion for the audiovisual sector. It has invested in the training of more than 20,000 producers, film distributors, directors, and screenwriters to help them adapt to new technologies. Each year, MEDIA supports around 2,000 European projects in film, television, including series and other audio-visual works, which are distributed digitally in cinema, on television and through video on demand.
