The capital of Croatia is Zagreb. Croatia boasts countless natural and cultural heritage. There are 8 National Parks, 11 Nature Parks and 10 monuments that have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Due to its position, the climate in Croatia is divided into two zones: Moderately continental and Mediterranean. Average temperatures in summer months in Croatia vary between 23° C and 26° C in the coastal region and between 20° C and 22°C in the continental region. In winter, average temperatures range between 0 and -2° C in continental region, and in the coastal part between 4 and 6°C. Croatia has been a member of the European Union since 1 July 2013, but official national currency is still the Croatian kuna (short KN or HRK). DESTINATIONS Zadar is a city in northern Dalmatia and administrative center of Zadar County. It has about 75,000 inhabitants. Due to its position in the central part of the Adriatic, it is well connected with the rest of Croatia and is easily accessible by land, air and sea. Zadar is a city of 3,000 years of long and interesting history. The city center is located on a peninsula that has been the target of numerous conquerors over the centuries and has been destroyed several times. Turbulent history has left many significant monuments that are still visible in the city today. One of the most recognizable is the church of St. Donatus from the 9th century, which captivates with its monumental size and unusual circular shape. The remains of the largest Roman Forum in Croatia testify Roman urbanization of the city, which began in the 1st century BC and whose elements are still visible today. Zadar Cathedral is dedicated to St. Anastasia, which is also the largest cathedral in Dalmatia. The modern installations of the Sea Organ and Greeting to the Sun are located on the promenade by the sea and have become a kind of symbol of the city. Pag is the fifth largest island in Croatia and the island with the longest coast. It is about 60 kilometers long, connected to the mainland by a bridge and about an hour drive from Zadar. Pag stands out with its rocky and beautiful karst landscape. It is an island of lace, cheese, salt and lamb. Pag lace is a unique product of skilful hands of women from the town of Pag. Lace making is a very old tradition and since 2009 Pag lace has been inscribed on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage. The world-famous cheese from the island of Pag is made from sheep's milk with a unique taste due to the salty herbs that sheep consume. Apart from cheese, Pag is also known for its salt, which is considered one of the finest in Croatia. Ugljan and Pašman are two islands located opposite of Zadar and Biograd. Both islands are extremely green with lots of vegetation and fragrant herbs. The islands are separated by the imposing Ždrelac canal, and are connected by the bridge. Charming coastal towns are lined along entire northeastern side of the island in natural bays. For generations locals living ont the islands were connected to the sea, seafaring and fishing, and 2000 years of tradition of olive growing has left hundreds of thousands of olive trees that produce oil of exceptional quality and aroma. Krka National park covers the area along the river Krk, and in 1985 it was declared a national park. With its 7 travertine waterfalls, the river Krka is a natural and karst phenomenon. The most famous are Skradinski buk, Roški slap and Manojlovački waterfalls. In addition to waterfalls, in the national park you can see the island of Visovac, which is located in the middle of the lake, and since 1445 there is a Franciscan monastery on the island. In the national park there is also an ethnographic collection with old water mills. Vrana lake Nature park is the largest natural lake in Croatia and one of the largest swamps. The lake is 13 km long and it is cut into the karst reef, which also serves as a natural barrier that separates the lake from the sea. Nevertheless, the lake is connected to the sea by the artificial canal Prosika, which was breached in 1781. The depth of the lake is between 2 and 5 m, and since natural vegetation is very well preserved, it is a special ornithological reserve in which over 100,000 birds spend the winter. In the Middle ages, the old town of Vrana was built in the immediate vicinity of the lake. For a long time, inside of the walls of Vrana were kept insignia - symbols of the rule of the Croatian kingdom, and later it was used by the Knights Templar.
