Nanny Sharing is an arrangement whereby a nanny is employed by more than one family to care for the children of each family. Nanny shares can work in a number of ways. For example: The nanny looks after one family’s children for some of the time at their home,(e.g. three days a week) and the other family’s children, at their home for some of the time (e.g. two days a week) The nanny looks after one family’s children at that family’s home and a second family drops their children at the first family’s home. When is a city/county permit or state license required? When two or more families hire a nanny to care for resident and non-resident children at the same location at the same time, a city/county permit (5 children or fewer) or state license (more than 5 children) is required. The host family of the Nanny Share arrangement needs to have a conversation with their insurance agent about liability (workman’s compensation, claims by the non-host family, transportation liability). As the employer, you are responsible for withholding funds for social security. Who is responsible for completing the application for a Home Child Care permit? The nanny would complete the application with the address of the family where the resident children live and the care is provided. The nanny would need to meet all health and safety requirements that any family child care provider must have to receive a permit. If the nanny requires a state licensed they must comply with all state licensing requirements. Whose background information is included when applying for a permit? All adults in the home, including the nanny, must complete the criminal background check. What are other responsibilities of the host family? All adults in the home must have a satisfactory Child Protective Services check, TB tests, and complete a sworn statement form. What certifications or training must the Nanny have? Before receiving a permit, the nanny must complete first aid and CPR certifications. Once permitted, the nanny would need 12 hours of training starting in 2013; 14 hours of training in 2014; and 16 hours of training in 2015 and each subsequent year. If the nanny is state licensed they must comply with all state licensing training requirements. If no permit or license is required, no training is required by law. Must any members of the host family have any certifications or training? No, this is not necessary. If the host family changes Nannies and there is a Home Child Care permit, what is the process regarding the new Nanny? A new facility application must be submitted if a new nanny is hired, including the $14 fee, all safety checks for the new nanny, home visit by the child care specialist and a home inspection by the City of Falls Church Fire Marshal.
