REGIONAL GEOLOGICAL HISTORY Utah has been near sea level for most of its Phanerozoic geologic history, only rising much above that level over the last hundred million years or so during the Sevier and Laramide oro- genic events. The UF has not been systematically collected for many decades. Since the Carnegie Museum field trips through the first half of the century (Douglass, 1910; Peterson, 1919; Kay, 1957; Dawson, 1966), only brief visits have been made to the UF, usually by museums interested in obtaining a sample of the typical fauna for their collections. Because most of the work on the UF occurred during an era that emphasized the discovery of large mammals (for example, the brontotheres), the smaller mammals from the formation remained under- represented in collections. Partly for this reason, a series of annual expeditions to the UF was initiated in 1993 by Washington University (WU), St. Louis, which focused on finding smaller taxa, such as primates, insectivores, proteutheres, and rodents (figure 2). The purposes of this review are to introduce the reader to the mammalian faunas of the UF and to provide an update on current field research on this formation. The first section provides an overview of the geological framework and reviews what is known of climate and paleoenvironments. Subsequent sections summarize the Figure 2. Mammals of the Middle Eocene Unita Formation - Rasmussen, Conroy, Friscia, Townsend, Kinkel Miscellaneous Publication 99-1 Vertebrate Paleontology in Utah 403 The UF consists of sandstone paleochan- nels and overbank siltstone and mudstone deposits that accumulated on the distributary delta of a lake occupying the basin (figure 3)(Kay, 1934; Grande, 1984; Hamblin, 1987). Traditionally, the formation is divided into three sequential lithologic units, Uinta A, B and C (Osborn, 1895, 1929). Uinta A has rarely yielded fossil mammals and its relationship to the Bridgerian-Uintan boundary remains uncer- tain (Dane, 1954; Walsh, 1996b). Our under- standing of the UF fauna is based almost entirely on fossils from Uinta B and C. The Uinta B fauna is best known from material col- lected at White River Pocket, a loosely circum- scribed region just southeast of the junction of the White River and the Green River, while the Uinta C fauna is known best by collections Figure 3. A collector in the lower left provides scale. region well east of the Green River, on land administered by the U.S. Bureau of Land Man- agement (figure 4). The repository for the newly collected material is the Carnegie Muse- um of Natural History (CM) of Pittsburgh (chosen because of its historically important collections from the basin). Within the Uinta Basin the Bridgerian/Uin- tan boundary is currently dated to about 46 Ma (Chron C20r; Prothero, 1996; Prothero and Swisher, 1992). Poorly fossiliferous Uinta A is in sediments of normal polarity and is presently dated to about 46.3 to 47.8 Ma (Chron C21n). Most of Uinta B is reversed polarity and dates to about 43.8 to 46.3 Ma (Chron C20r) although a short normal zone spanning upper Uinta B and lower Uinta C probably correlates with Chron C20n (42.5 - 43.8 Ma).
