OTC All Comers Meets ​​Draw 1,600 Competitors Another successful series of Oregon Track Club All Comers track and field meets ended in August. As always, this series of ten meets provided the opportunity for people of all ages and skill levels to compete. From the 100 meter dash, to the triple jump, to the javelin throw, and events in between, there truly was an event for everybody. Over the course of the ten meets, 1,600 athletes competed. Here are a few highlights: Allison Wood set an American masters world record in the high jump when she cleared 5’5” on July 25. The pole vault club, Raising the Bar, not only provided volunteers to officiate the pole vault event, but attracted pole vaulters from all over the state. Some weeks there were over 30 pole vault competitors, ranging in age from 13 to a whopping 75-years-young. Go here for all the results. Read the full article Shop Nike, Just Do It! The Nike Company Store is available to eligible OTC members in October, the perfect time to get a jump start on your holiday shopping. Twice a year, eligible Club members can access the Nike Company Store in Beaverton and take advantage of deep discounts on Nike merchandise. October is the last OTC access month this year. The store is not open to the public. You must be on the guest pass list. Access to the store has to be earned by Club members. Here are the two ways you can become eligible to visit the store: Read the full article Grass Roots Grants Applications Due Oct. 1 The Oregon Track Club is currently accepting applications for its Grass Roots Grants program. This program is dedicated to promote and support the growth of track and field and running- related projects and programs throughout our community, especially at the youth level. The program considers requests from groups within a 25-mile radius of the University of Oregon campus. Preference is given to non-profit organizations. Grant applications must be received by October 1 to be considered for the current calendar year. Additional information and the full application form and instructions are available here. Perfect Time for a Run/Walk The average September temperature in Eugene is a mild 77 degrees w ith only four days of rainfall in the month. What a perfect time of the year to participate in the OTC Run/Walk at Amazon Park. September 12 is the date for the next Run/Walk. Registration starts at 5:00 p.m. w ith the running and w alking begin at 6:00 p.m. The course is an easy 5K w ith part of the course on the bark trail and other sections on the paved paths of the park. The event is free for OTC members or $5.00 non- members. Save time by registering in advance online (go here). Online registration is open until 3:00 p.m. race day. Thanks to all of the volunteers and sponsors w ho make these events possible. UO Cross Country has Three State Meets The University of Oregon cross country teams w ill compete three times in the state of Oregon this year. The Ducks start the season on September 6 at the Ash Creek Invitational hosted by Western Oregon University in Monmouth. The Ducks w ill host the Bill Dellinger Invitational w hich starts at 10:30 a.m. at the Pine Ridge Golf Club (formerly Springfield Golf Club). Fifteen teams are scheduled to participate in the event. The Pac-12 Conference Championships w ill be held at the Trysting Tree Golf Course in Corvallis on November 1. The Oregon w omen are the defending conference champions. As the summer draws to a close and we enter the fall season, I decided to take a quick look back and a quick peek ahead. For me, the first eight months of my connection to the OTC has felt different than in years past. The beginning of the year started off well enough with our Annual Business Meeting and Dinner. It’s always great to welcome new board members, reconnect with old friends, and hear from movers and shakers in the community. However, the next few months were a little challenging because the Hayward Field construction project meant I couldn’t get my track and field fix. While I'm excited to watch the new Hayward Field Kevin Marbury rise out of the ground and take shape, I'm waiting for that Hayward magic we all know to return. Read the full article Do Not Miss These Masters Events The ever-popular annual OTCM Pizza Party returns to Track Tow n Pizza on Franklin Boulevard from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 16. You purchase your ow n beverages and salad w hile OTCM supplies the pizzas. This agenda-free annual event is an ideal opportunity to meet your fellow masters track and field fans, officials, volunteers, and athletes w hile enjoying some great pizza. The OTC Masters Holiday Party w ill be Friday, December 13 at the Washington Park Center from 6:00-8:00 p.m. It w ill be a potluck event and w ill include the traditional “White Elephant” gift exchange w hich is alw ays a fun activity! The OTC Masters Annual Aw ards Dinner and Meeting w ill be at the Hilton Garden Inn in Springfield on Tuesday, January 14, 2020. Oregon Track Club M ASTERS Mark Rowland, A Drive to Win By Don McLean Mark Rowland, 56, is in his 11th year as coach of Oregon Track Club Elite, a Nike-sponsored world-class distance running program based in Eugene, OR. So far, four members of the current team have qualified for the 2019 IAAF World Championships in Doha, Qatar: Hanna Green, Ben Blankenship, Hassan Mead, and Nijel Amos. Green, Blankenship, and Mead will represent Team USA, while Amos, ranked No. 1 in the world in the 800 meters, competes for his native Botswana. Read the full article Oregon Track Club M ASTERS Harvey Lewellen Breaks Records, Again! Harvey Lewellen, 90, continued his record-setting performances by recording three American records at the 2019 USATF National Masters Throws Championships held August 3-4 in Lisle, IL. As the only OTC member at the meet, Lewellen competed in the Throws Pentathlon (consisting of the hammer, shot put, discus, javelin, and weight throw) and won his M90-95 age group with an American record score of 3,643 points. He also competed in the Ultra-Weight Pentathlon (weight throw, super weight, and ultra- weight) winning his age group with another American Record of 3,278 points. In the super weight throw event, he set yet another age group American record with a 5.72m throw. Lewellen previously set the men’s age group world record in the hammer throw at the USATF Masters Outdoor Championships held recently in Ames, IA. The OTC congratulates Harvey for his continued outstanding performances! Oregon Track Club M ASTERS Meet Opportunities for Masters Athletes Upcoming September and October cross country and track and field meets for Masters athletes and for the OTC Athletics Team are below. Some of these meets may have qualifying standards. Some of these meets require pre-approval from the meet director to enter as an “open” or non-collegiate athlete. Entry deadlines provided when day of event registration is not allowed. Please check with the meet director for entry requirements. September 7: USATF Oregon 1 Hour Run Championships, McKenzie Community Track, Blue River, OR. September 21: Stumptown Cross Country Meet, USATF Oregon 5K Championships, Lents Park, Portland.
