The first Indy car designed to take advantage of ground effects was the 2K Chaparral. Johnny Rutherford drove this car in 1980, won pole position, led for 118 laps, and won comfortably by almost 30 seconds. Al Unser used a 2K Chaparral to qualify third in the ‘79 Indy 500. “When they came down to take the green flag,” Jim Hall (Chaparral’s founder) said, “everyone backed off for Turn #1 except Al. It was the most amazing thing you ever saw. He stretched 100 yards in the first turn, 100 [more] yards in the second.” The race (or the 2K) ended with a gearbox failure, but the next year (1980) Rutherford won.
