Dr. Carl Eckart to resign April 10, 1967 Dr. Carl Eckart, Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs at the University of California, San Diego for the past two and one-half years, is retiring from that position to return to full-time teaching and research, it has been announced by UCSD Chancellor John S. Galbraith. Dr. Eckart, who will leave his duties as Vice Chancellor on July 1, has agreed to remain available for consultation and advice in that area. His administrative responsibilities will be assumed by Dr. Robert D. Tschirgi, Vice Chancellor of Academic Planning. Dr. Eckart's distinguished career as both a scientist and administrator has spanned more than 21 years at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the newer general campus of the University on. Torrey Pines Mesa. In 1946, he accepted appointment as Director of the Marine Physical Laboratory and as Professor of Geophysics at Scripps. Two years later he took over the duties of Director of Scripps, succeeding Dr. Harald U. Sverdrup. In 1950, he relinquished the post to again spend full-time as Director of the Marine Physical Laboratory. In 1965, Dr. Eckart was appointed by the University Board of Regents to the newly created post of Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs on the San Diego campus. In announcing Dr. Eckart's retirement from the post, Dr. Galbraith said, "During his almost two and one-half years as Vice Chancellor, Dr. Eckart has made substantial contributions to the development of this campus, and the administration and faculty are very much in his debt." Dr. Eckart received his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1925 and later served on the faculty at the University of Chicago before moving to the west coast. He was elected as a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 1953 and has served on the Academy's Committee on Atmospheric Science, and on various special study committees of the Department of Defense. He is also a Fellow of the American Physical Society and a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and holds membership in several scientific societies. At UCSD, Dr. Eckart has served as Chairman of the Academic Senate, on the Chancellor's Advisory Committee for the Irvine campus, and in the Universitywide Legislative Assembly and Academic Council. A year ago, Dr. Eckart was honored by the National Academy of Sciences for his pioneering research in oceanography. He was awarded the Academy's Alexander Agassiz Medal for his "perceptive and far-ranging analysis of the motions of the sea and the forces behind them.".
