Young Boys, despite losing both games to Roma, finished as runners-up to the Italian side in Group A, clinching their place with a 2-1 home win against CFR Cluj on Matchday 6. Previous meetings • The clubs' first meeting in UEFA competition provided a riveting contest. The runaway Swiss Super League leaders raced into a 3-0 half-time lead with goals from Christian Fassnacht, Jordan Siebatcheu and Meschack Elia, but by midway through the second period Leverkusen had pulled it back to 3-3 thanks to a double from Czech international Patrik Schick and substitute Moussa Diaby. The last word, though, went to Siebatcheu, who crowned his first European start of the season with Young Boys' 89th-minute winner. • Leverkusen have won both of their previous two home games against Swiss sides, most recently overcoming FC Zürich 1-0 with a Tin Jedvaj goal in the 2018/19 UEFA Europa League group stage. • Despite the first-leg victory YB have won just three of their 14 matches against German opposition (D5 L6) and have lost all four of their two-legged knockout ties against Bundesliga sides, most recently going down 9-2 on aggregate to Borussia Mönchengladbach in the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League play-offs (1-3 h, 1-6 a). They have never won on German soil in six attempts, having drawn their first three matches there and lost the three most recent. Form guide Leverkusen • Fifth place in the 2019/20 Bundesliga earned Leverkusen a return to the UEFA Europa League, where they reached the quarter-finals last season after finishing third in their UEFA Champions League group. They won both legs against Porto in the round of 32 (2-1 h, 3-1 a) and Rangers in the round of 16 (3-1 a, 1-0 h) before losing their last-eight encounter 2-1 to Internazionale in nearby Düsseldorf. They also reached the final of last season's DFB-Pokal, losing 4-2 to Bayern München. • This season Peter Bosz's side kicked off their European campaign in the UEFA Europa League group stage and they made it four qualifications out of four by topping Group C with 15 points, the only blemish a 1-0 defeat at Slavia on Matchday 2 in which Karim Bellarabi was sent off in the first half. That 4-0 win against the Czech side on Matchday 6 clinched first place, following high-scoring doubles over Hapoel Beer-Sheva (4-2 a, 4-1 h) and Nice (6-2 h, 3-2 a). Leverkusen's final tally of 21 goals was just one short of Napoli's UEFA Europa League group stage record. • Leverkusen's record in five previous UEFA Europa League round of 32 ties is W3 L2 and has developed a pattern that they will want to break this term. They won the first, against Metalist Kharkiv in 2010/11 (4-0 a, 2-0 h), lost the second, against Benfica in 2012/13 (0-1 h, 1-2 a), won the third, against Sporting CP in 2015/16 (1-0 a, 3-1 h), lost the fourth, against Krasnodar in 2018/19 (0-0 a, 1-1 h), and won the fifth, against Porto last season. • The Werkself's overall home record in the UEFA Europa League, play-offs included, is W14 D5 L2, with no defeats in the last 11 matches (W8 D3), victories in each of the last five, and 14 goals inflicted on the visitors in this season's group stage. • Leverkusen have won four of the seven UEFA ties in which they lost the first leg away, most famously in the first instance when they went down 3-0 at Espanyol in the first leg of the 1987/88 UEFA Cup final, only to win by the same scoreline in Germany before taking the trophy on penalties. Their other three aggregate wins have come on the only occasions when they have lost the first leg by a one-goal margin, most recently in the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League play-off against Lazio (0-1 a, 3-0 h). Young Boys • Champions of Switzerland for the third season running in 2019/20, and the 14th time in all, Young Boys lost last season's UEFA Champions League play-off on away goals to Crvena zvezda but reached the UEFA Europa League group stage, where they finished third in a section containing Porto, Rangers and Feyenoord.
