If 5/30 Utica, NY you’re new to Taylor’s hushed vocals and overall 6/3 Greenville, SC somber reflections on relationships and life, then 6/5 Charlotte, NC these ten new tunes might take some time getting used to. Either way, Taylor is in fine form on 6/6 Raleigh, NC LadyLuck, most notably on the vibrant “Time Lapse 6/20 Atlanta, GA Lifeline” and the happy-go-lucky “Cartoons and 6/26 Lockport, NY Forever Plans,” the latter getting a boost in the form 6/27 Steamboat Springs, CO of backup vocals from R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe. 7/5 Jamestown, NY “Cartoons” closes out the largely mellow album with a nice glimpse of hope; it’s not a knockout punch 7/18 Chicago, IL that will get you through a workout or help you save 7/23 Oshkosh, WI the world, but it will make you smile. Lucky or not, ... and many more TBA Maria Taylor wins again.” - Glide Magazine Envy Magazine thinks Make A Move “is likely the most bruising set of blues rock this year” “Cody Dickinson has spent a decade performing with his brother Luther as the North Mississippi Allstars. Recently, though, he’s been moonlighting with a different bunch of guys under a different moniker – Hill Country Revue. Dickinson brought on Chris Chew (bass), Ed “Hot” Cleveland (drums), Kirk Smithhart (guitar), singer Daniel Coburn and several guests including his brother and the Burnside bros. to record Make A Move. It is likely the most bruising set of blues rock this year. For some reason “straight-ahead guitar rock” sounds like an insult, but if it’s interesting straight-ahead guitar rock what’s the problem? Hill Country uses a sweltering multi-guitar attack to achieve something more refined than mere classic-rock nostalgia. Latin figures paint the intro on “Alice Mae,” while Hendrix peeks out of the lurching “Let’s Talk About Me and You.” Coburn is a good vocalist; he has the baritone for sturm and drang and doesn’t overdo the macho posturing. The stars are Dickinson and Smithhart. The guitarists are not just fabulous solo shows; they play together with a fluidity and empathy that recalls The Allman Brothers (“You Can Make It” particularly makes this clear). The grand finale is the call-and- answer guitar duel “Growing Up In Mississippi.” This trick has been around since Abbey Road, but here it is legitimately impressive and entertaining. For fans of any of the guitarists name-dropped in this review (AKA most music listeners), Make A Move is a treat.” Chicago’s Metromix weighs in on the new Fastball album “The buzz: If you were anywhere near a radio in 1998, you know Fastball: their massive hit “The Way” was one of that year’s definitive anthems. Dumped by their major label in 2000, the band has been unfairly relegated to the same musical limbo occupied by other late ‘90s alterna-rockers like Third Eye Blind and Local H—not edgy enough to reclaim their indie roots, not commercially viable enough to have another hit. Little White Lies is their first album since 2004’s well-reviewed but largely ignored Keep Your Wig On. The verdict: For anyone who only knows “The Way,” Little White Lies should come as a revelation. The airtight vocal harmonies and interlocking guitars of co-frontmen Miles Zuniga and Tony Scalzo recall the best of the British invasion and their many descendants: “Mono to Stereo” is a sugary blast of Kinks-style power-pop; “White Noise” and the New Wave-tinged title track bristle with the piss and vinegar of vintage Elvis Costello; “She’s Got the Rain” recalls Woodface-era Crowded House, all punchy harmony vocals and sweetly resolved minor chords. If any ‘90s rock survivors deserve a second chance at stardom, it’s these guys.” Rating: 4 stars out of 5 For up-to-the-minute AAA news... RIGHT ARM RESOURCE WEEKLY READER - 4/29/09.
