General Visa Information Welcome at the Austrian Embassy Ljubljana!

General Visa Information Welcome at the Austrian Embassy Ljubljana! Austria is a Schengen Country. Citizens of the European Economic Area (EEA) are allowed to travel with a valid passport or valid ID card. The Schengen countries are: Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Finland, France, Italy, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Czech Republic, Hungary, as well as non-EU members Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. Third country nationals (*) who want to travel to the Schengen countries for tourism, private visits or business, need to apply for a short stay Schengen Visa C (up to 90 days within 180 days), which is valid for all Schengen countries. (*except nationals of countries which signed bilateral or multilateral agreements on the abolition of visa requirement. In very special cases visas with a longer validity - national Visa D (for more than 90 and up to 6 months) can be issued. If you intend to stay in Austria as a tourist, on a business trip, to visit friends or relatives for more than 90 but less than 6 months, or you intend to take up short- term employment (less than 6 months) AND you are neither an EU nor an EFTA citizen, you need a national Austrian visa (Visa D). The Visa D entitles you to travel up to 90 days within the validity of the visa and up to 90 days within 180 days in the other Schengen countries. Only under clearly specified circumstances a Visa D will allow you to work temporarily (e.g. if you are an artist or entertainer on a short-term employment/contract, see more information: www.migration.gv.at) in Austria. It is not a work permit per se and, as such, does not allow you to take up any employment you like. Please note that you need the visa D to legally take up your temporary employment (as outlined above) even if you are allowed to enter Austria without a visa and your stay does not exceed three months. You must provide the Embassy with all documents and additional authorizations required; otherwise, the visa can not be issued. The application itself does not give the right to travel or to get a visa. Visas can only be issued if all necessary preconditions are met.
