LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION Parliament House GPO Box 3700 State Square DARWIN NT 0801 Darwin NT 0800 Telephone: 08 8936 5659 [email protected] Facsimile: 08 8942 6827 Mr Anthony Ciconte Acting Chairman Northern Territory Seafood Council E: [email protected] Dear Mr Ciconte, Country Liberal Party Commitments towards the NT Seafood Industry The CLP recognises and values the enormous contribution that the commercial fishing and the seafood industry makes to the Northern Territory economy. We also recognise that the continued support of the industry and investment in new opportunities is essential to ensuring that the sector grows. If elected, a CLP Government will work in conjunction and collaboration with the NTSC and other stakeholders to ensure that private investment, employment and industry growth is achieved. 1. Continued commitment to the evidence based NT Fisheries Resource Sharing Framework which was implemented in 2015 In conjunction with all stakeholders, the former CLP government designed and introduced the Fisheries Resource Sharing Framework in 2015 and we continue to support that broad decision- making framework. 2. Modernisation of the Fisheries Act to bring the NT seafood industry in line with worlds best practice and other competing Acts around Australia that provide operational, economic and ecological benefits The CLP supports a review of the Fisheries Act 1988 in order to ensure that the Territory’s seafood industry is operating under legislation that is in line with best practice. 3. Resourcing for a Fisheries Taskforce to aid development and roll out of harvest strategies If elected, a CLP Government will review existing arrangements and will, in consultation with the NTSC and other stakeholders, determine the best framework for developing harvest strategies. 2 4. Development of a policy to support public/private sector infrastructure investment partnerships that drives improved efficiencies and increased profitability for the seafood sector The CLP is committed to exploring infrastructure projects that will provide a return to Territorians, including those that will facilitate or increase the quantum of private investment. We will review existing unloading, refuelling and port facilities and work in consultation with the NTSC to identify appropriate infrastructure projects that will help grow the commercial seafood industry. 5. Fast track a NT Seafood Industry Development plan If elected, the CLP will work with the NTSC and Department of Primary Industries and Resources to set a timeline for the development of a plan to increase private investment in the industry. 6. Ongoing support for funding mechanisms for the NTSC A CLP Government will honour all existing funding agreements that are in place and, if a review is required, we will do so in consultation with the NTSC. Please do not hesitate to contact my office if you have any further questions. Yours sincerely Lia Finocchiaro Leader of the Opposition 6 August 2020 .
