CROSS-INDEX OF RAYNAUD AND LINKER NUMBERS . 386 INTRODUCTION The standard bibliography of Old French lyrics has, since 1884, been Raynaud's Bibliographie des chansonniers franfais. In Volume 11 Raynaud listed each lyric alphabetically according to rhyme word, with an index giving the number of each poem assigned to authors. Volume I contains an analysis of each chansonnier. He further as signed a rather cumbersome letter and number designation to each chansonnier. Two years later Schwan revised Raynaud's system of designation of the manuscripts by substituting simpler A,B,C designations. These have remained the standard since that date. No major revisions of Raynaud have appeared, although Jeanroy and Gennrich published additions and corrections to Raynaud. In 1956, Volume I of a re working of Raynaud appeared, the work of Spanke. Spanke had pre pared this before his death in World War 11, and a second volume was never completed. Spanke's work is now quite out of date. It should be further noted that it follows Raynaud in listing poems by rhyme word. The present work is a complete and more up-to-date reworking of the material, as the following will indicate. I have listed first those works which offer collective treatment of a number of manuscripts, such as the writings of Raynaud, Schwan, Jeanroy, Gennrich and Spanke. This is followed by a listing of those manuscripts which have customarily been assigned letters, with Ray naud's designations in parentheses for easier reference to older pub lications which use them. Each manuscript is followed by indication of facsimiles and editions based on it. The next section, headed "lesser Manuscripts," includes a large number of manuscripts which have not been given letter designations. IO A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF OLD FRENCH LYRICS INTRODUCTION II Some contain only a single poem, others a large number. I have tried in the listing of records, for many indices of records have such vague to indicate, by my number, the contents of each. information as "chanson," without giving first lines. Not only is this A great number of lyrics were inserted in longer works, such as true of listings, but also of record labels. Without the record avail the Guillaume de Dole. Those so inserted are listed under the titles able, and played, I could not complete this part. of these longer works. The next section is a general bibliography of lyrics published in anthologies, periodicals, and the like. I have deliberately left out works of literary criticism, since to have included these would not only have increased this bibliography too much, but would also change to a considerable extent its purpose. The general bibliography is followed by listing under the appro priate heading those publications which deal specifically with a single type of lyric, such as the aube, lai, pastourelle, etc. The same treat ment is given to publications of poems from a particular region. A special section deals with the music of the poems. The major difference between this bibliography and its predeces sors is the treatment of the lyrics themselves. The basis of this is the same used by Pillet-Carstens in their Bibliographie der Trouba dours. The work of each trouvere is listed alphabetically by initial word under the name of the trouvere, headed by editions of that poet's work. Indication is given of the occurrence of music in the manuscripts and of the publication of the music. Also, a number of recordings, though not all, have been listed. For those lyrics which have contradictory manuscript ascriptions, I have generally used the latest editor's assignment of authorship, with cross-references to other poets. Anonymous poems are next listed, again alphabetically by first word. Special attention has been given to listing motets and rondeaux. Raynaud excluded these, except for a few which, according to Spanke, he included by mistake. Spanke omitted them with the observation: "1st als rondeau zu streichen." By content and usage these belong in any treatment of lyrics. Some of the lyrics which appear as sep arate poems also show up as parts of motets. Finally, indices of abbreviations of trouveres' names, and of books and articles cited, are included. A few lesser manuscripts have not been available to me, so that indications of music in them may be lacking. The same lack occurs TABLE OF ABBREVIATIONS 13 BEG Bibliotheque de l'Ecole des Chartes.
