The Future of the Arts in America Thursday, March 16, 2017 8:30 - 10:30am Generously hosted by K&L Gates Agenda Welcome Mari Horita, President & CEO, ArtsFund Stephan Coonrod, Partner, K&L Gates; ArtsFund Trustee The Future of the Arts in America Michael Kaiser Q+A Moderated by Jeffrey Herrmann, Managing Director, Seattle Repertory Theatre Open Discussion Closing Remarks Michael Kaiser is Chairman of the Devos Institute of Arts Management at the University of Maryland, where he oversees the Institute’s training and consulting programs, both in the United States and around the world. He created this renowned arts management institute in 2001, then housed at the Kennedy Center. To date, the Institute has advised hundreds of individuals, organizations, governments, and foundations throughout the United States and in more than 80 countries on six continents. The Institute’s programs have included capacity building programs, regional and national initiatives that focus on board development, nine-month and summer fellowships for both American and foreign arts leaders, as well as internships and other personalized training tailored to a variety of arts organizations around the world. Kaiser was President of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts from January 2001 through August 2014, and is the Kennedy Center’s President Emeritus. Prior positions include: Executive Director of the Royal Opera House, Executive Director of American Ballet Theatre, and Executive Director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Foundation. He is the author of eight books, including: Curtains? The Future of the Arts in America (2015); The Cycle: A Practical Approach to Managing Arts Organizations (2013); and The Art of the Turnaround (2008); He writes a weekly column for The Huffington Post. Mr. Kaiser received his Master’s degree in management from M.I.T.’s Sloan School of Management and his Bachelor’s degree in economics from Brandeis University.
