Providence Region including Kakisa ‐ Chan Lake Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain. Thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon and persist into the evening before dissipating. Main threats with these thunderstorms are expected to be hail and heavy downpours. Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall. The fire was initial attacked by air tankers and helicopter. A fire crew from Fort Providence continues to action the fire, which is being held. Cause of the fire was lightning. This closures remains in place until further notice. The Salt Plains Day Use Area remain open and can be accessed from NWT Highway 5. FIRE INFROMATION There are currently two active fires in Wood Buffalo National Park. Fire 7 is located 14 kilometres south of Sweetgrass Station in the southern end of the park. It is currently being held. Fire 8 is located on the Parsons Lake Road approximately 21 kilometres west of the Salt River Day Use Area and 14 kilometres northwest of the Pine Lake Road. This fire, which was started by a lightning strike on June 24, has led to the closure of the Parson’s Lake Road until further notice. Air tankers were deployed on June 24 but the fire continued to grow throughout the night and into June 25. Crews were deployed to the area on June 25 but have since been recalled due to continued fire growth. The fire’s behaviour is currently being assessed to determine appropriate future management actions. There are currently no facilities threatened.
