This follows the Irish Music Rights Organisation, which collects royalties on behalf of artists, confirming that licence revenues last year rose by 3.2% or €1.18m to€38m. IMRO’s directors’ reportsays “public performance and overseas revenue contributed largely to this increase”. The amount in royalties paid out rose 4.5%, from €32.3m to €33.73m. IMRO’s membership increased by 8% or 626 artists, from 8,052 to 8,678. The organisation was sitting on an accumulated deficit of €1.32m at the end of last year. Its directors’ report states that IMRO has a net excess of liabilities over current assets and “this is primarily as a result of the refurbishment of Copyright House in 2008 from existing resources as opposed to bank borrowings”. IMRO is a not for profit organisation and last year, its surplus after paying out royalties amounted to €67,664 compared to €93,410 in 2012. Royalties received from IMRO are often the sole income received by non-performing song writers. Royalties are generated from a broad range of sources — from the music played to phone callers — to a low percentage of revenues at the 3 Arena in Dublin. Firms face an annual tariff from €96 to €198 for playing music on multiple lines for callers. Doctors and dentists face an annual bill of between €70 to €158 for playing music in waiting rooms.
