His role as NKU’s president includes full authority over the administration of the academic, business and fiscal operations of this public, four-year institution which has an enrollment of more than 14,000 students. In 2002, Dr. Votruba chaired the American Association of State Colleges and Universities’ National Task Force on Public Engagement, and he serves as a faculty member in the AASCU New President’s Academy. in 2004, he delivered the annual AASCU President-to-Presidents Lecture entitled “Leading the Engaged University.” Dr. Votruba is Secretary-Treasurer of the AASCU Board of Directors and is currently President of the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities. He serves on a variety of boards including the National Campus Compact Board of Directors, the Association of Governing Board’s Council of Presidents, and the Board of Directors of the Ohio National Mutual Holding Company. Prior to accepting his position at NKU, Dr. Votruba had been vice provost for University Outreach and Michigan State University since 1989. Dr. Votruba’s senior executive position at Michigan State was created in 1989 to oversee all aspects of the University’s academic outreach mission which involves extending and applying for research, teaching and professional expertise of the faculty for the direct benefit of external audiences. He had responsibility for 14 colleges, more than 100 academic departments, more than 100 centers and institutes, and the Michigan Extension Service. He oversaw a $64 million annual budget which included the administration of several campus-wide competitive grant programs. Dr. Votruba also was the director of Michigan State’s W.K. Kellogg Foundation Lifelong Education Grant from 1989-95. This $10.2 million project was designed to expand public access to the University’s scholarly expertise by more fully integrating academic outreach as a core mission at the college and department level. He was also a professor of Higher and Adult Education at Michigan State. Prior to his tenure at Michigan State, Dr. Votruba was the interim provost and vice president for Academic Affairs (1988-89) and dean of the School of Education and Human Development (1983-88) at the State University of New York at Binghamton. SUNY-Binghamton, with an enrollment of 12,000, in national recognized for its commitment to undergraduate education and research excellence. Prior to SUNY-Binghamton, he held several positions at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, including head of the Division of Extramural Courses, Office of Continuing Education and Public Service and associate director of the Office of Continuing Education and Public Service. Dr. Votruba earned his bachelor’s degree in political science in 1968 from Michigan State. He also received his master’s degree in interdisciplinary social science and a doctorate in higher education administration at Michigan State. Dr. Votruba’s wife, Rachel, is actively involved in several community-based non-profit organizations. Their family includes three children and five grandsons. 2 • Northern Kentucky University Men’s Soccer 2010 NCAA Division II National Champions 2010 Great Lakes Valley Conference Champions NKUDr. Scott Athletic Eaton Director Dr. Scott Eaton is entering his third year as the director of athletics at Northern Kentucky University. He assumed that role on July 27, 2009. During Eaton’s two years as NKU’s director of athletics, the program has flourished and reached new heights in terms of community outreach and visibility. Since taking the position, Eaton has watched NKU win the 2010 Great Lakes Valley Conference All-Sports Trophy and capture back-to- back GLVC Commissioner’s Cup awards. In addition, the NKU men’s soccer program won the NCAA Division II national championship in 2010. It marked the first national title for a men’s sport at NKU. The soccer national championship in 2010 coincided with the opening of the $6.5 million NKU Soccer Stadium. Eaton played a key role in the design and building of the new facility, which enabled NKU to move its games back to campus for the first time since 1998. As a result of the move back to campus, NKU ranked fourth nationally in attendance in 2010. Under Eaton’s direction, NKU began participating in the Adopt-A-Class program this year, as Norse student-athletes and coaches adopted Newport Intermediate School as part of that initiative. Members of the NKU athletics department took frequent visits to Newport Intermediate as part of the Adopt-A-Class program, a non-profit organization dedicated to pairing classrooms in underserved urban schools with area businesses and community groups. Eaton also developed an Olympic Day for Newport Intermediate School in the spring, as students from the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades visited the NKU campus and participated in many activities with coaches, student-athletes and staff. NKU’s athletics programs also gained unprecedented commercial radio coverage during the past year on WQRT Real Talk (1160 AM). NKU basketball made the move back to the AM side of the dial after spending the previous four years on WIOK (107.5 FM). The move allowed listeners to enjoy the better strength of signal and additional promotional opportunities with the station. NKU baseball was also broadcast on 1160 AM this spring, making the Norse the only team in the tri-state on commercial airwaves. Eaton has served on various NCAA committees during his career, including the women’s basketball championships committee, the men’s basketball rules committee, and the NCAA
