Maaruder 102 LIST OF M EMBERS 103 I NDEX 119 PROCEEDINGS OF THE TWENTY-NINTH ANNUAL GATHERING OF THE A MERICAN CL AN GREGOR SOCIETY FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14, 1938 The twenty-ninth annual Gath ering of the Society was called to order at 3 :00 P. M. by the Chieftain with thirty-one members present. The Chaplain delivered the invocation. The following offi­ cers submitted their report s, which were received and ord ered to be printed in the Year Book. S cribe's R eport-During the year application papers were re­ ceived for seventeen new members, one of which was for Associate and two for minor memberships. Notices of the annual Gathering were mailed to all members two weeks prior to the Gathering. The program, which was largely arranged by the Registrar, was printed • and a copy mailed to each office r and to the chairman of standing committees. The following report s were received and ar e printed in this Year Book: Mrs. O. O. van den'Berg, Registrar. Miss "Mary Th erese Hill , Hi storian. Mr. John Edwin Munca ster, Treasurer. The following letter from the Ranking Deputy Chieftain was read by the Scribe: " Responsibilities her e have me so completely tied up for th e present that I can neith er atte nd the Gath erin g nor take tim e to write to fri end s in the Clan ; but I can not let the Annual Gath erin g pass without a word of greeting to all. "Having had nothing to do with the progr am, let me congratul ate you and the committee for arrangin g so successf ully fea tures th at should be memorable in the Clan's histor y. Moth er and I both wish that we could share the joys with all of you. At least we have had the grea t pleasure of an afternoon spent with Miss Helen "Volf e her e in Pittsbur gh; an association with so valu able a member of the Clan is an exce llent means of makin g us feel in close touch with the organization aga in. I f any laurels ar e being passed around for loyal, inter ­ ested, and disinterested service to the Society, she certa inly is entitled to them. Success to the Gath erin g.-KENNF.TH D ANN MAGRUD ER." Miss Emma Muncaster, Chairman of the Committee on Pine, reported that the sprigs of pine used as badges at this Gathering came from " T he Ridge," the home of our Treasur er. Mr. Clement William Sheriff reported that the l\Ianagement of the Willard Hotel had made the usual arrangements for the enter- 10 AMERICAN CLAN GREGOR SOCIETY tainment and comfort of the members. Mrs. Joseph H .W heat reported for the Committtee on Registration, that the registration book was on the table at the entrance to the Hall. She urged all members to sign the book before leaving. Mr s. Sheriff, of the Committ ee on Decoration, reported that her committee had per­ formed its duty. Upon motion duly car ried, a rising vote of thanks was given to the members of these committees for their fine work. A rising vote of thanks was also given Mrs. O. O. van den'Berg for her faithful and successful work in arranging the program. The Historian read the following memorials: James Opie Ma­ gr uder, by Egbert Watson Magruder, and Caroline Hill Mar shall, by Miss Mary Therese Hill. Th e Chieftain then requested all members to stand in silence for a minute in remembrance of those members who passed away since the previous Gathering. Upon motion of Dr. E. W .Magruder, a former Chieftain, the following amendment to the Rules of the Society was unanimously voted: "RESOLVED: That Section 1, Rul e VII of the Rules of the American Clan Gregor Society be amended to read as follows : "The Society shall hold an annual gath ering on the third Friday in October and Saturday following in the City of Washington, D.
