2020 Edinburgh International Swim Meet Welcome – East District

2020 EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL SWIM MEET WELCOME – EAST DISTRICT On behalf of the East District management team, I welcome everyone to the Royal Commonwealth Pool for the 2020 Edinburgh International Swim Meet. The East District extends a warm welcome to the many returning swimmers, coaches and officials and also to all those attending this year’s event for the very first time. “Come on in! You’ll have had your tea?” is the perennial tease put about - jocularly - by Scotland’s larger city with reference to Edinburgh hospitality. However, in truth Edinburgh is and historically always has been a very outward- looking city, receptive and welcoming to people, culture and influences from far and wide, from European influences during the Scottish Enlightenment and before, to genuinely becoming a “worldwide city” (and indeed World Heritage City) today. We are proud that this is a truly International Meet with overseas athletes from Denmark, France, Belgium, Ireland, Faroe Islands and Spain all planning to visit and support from the very best of youth and elite swimming from across the home nations. Unfortunately a number of our international visitors have been unable to travel from their home nations due to their Government’s restrictions – we hope to see them in Edinburgh next year. We look forward to packed and exciting finals sessions each evening when our younger age group swimmers can rub shoulders with elite swimmers from around the world and take inspiration from them. I have no doubt there will be many highlights and new memories made for elite swimmers and age-group swimmers alike. We wish all those competing a highly successful and enjoyable time. We are extremely grateful for the partnership of University of Edinburgh and the support from the City of Edinburgh Council. We also greatly appreciate support from TYR, Scottish Swimming and Edinburgh Leisure. Many thanks to all our other sponsors who have supported both the East District, and this event in particular, so consistently over the years. My thanks not only to those who have come to Edinburgh to compete at the event and to their loyal supporters but also to all the volunteers dryside and wetside, meet management and technical officials as well as the staff at the Royal Commonwealth Pool who have helped us to stage such an extraordinary spectacle in this historic venue. From amongst this small army of volunteers, it is appropriate to single out two names: Helen Murray MBE and Andra Laird, who have successfully brought together all those with the different expertise and talents necessary to form the team which delivers this annual International Swim Meet. I hope you all have a memorable time here in our beautiful and friendly city. For those who can perhaps stay a little longer, we hope you enjoy the ambience and welcoming atmosphere of our simply stunning city. I wish everyone an outstanding weekend. We are delighted once again to be one of the lead sponsors for the event, and to partner East District Swimming in delivering a fantastically fast-flowing and exciting competition format. I have no doubt this will be an unforgettable experience for everybody involved. Our University enjoys a rich and impressive heritage in international sport, and we see the pursuit of sporting success as completely consistent with our over-arching ethos of excellence in teaching, research and innovation. Sport is now a key part of University life, and we are proud to be one of the leading sporting universities in the country. Our performance sport programme is sector leading, giving our student athletes, as individuals or in teams, access to state-of-the-art facilities, inspirational coaching, specialist conditioning support, bursary awards, flexible study and expert medical care. This approach is paying dividends and helping our students realise their dual career ambitions of combining a world class education while striving for medal success at the highest international level in their chosen sport, be that at National, International, Olympic of Commonwealth level. The opportunity to compete against some of the best swimmers in Europe is a tantalising prospect for our swim team, particularly with Tokyo 2020 on the horizon. This will be a wonderful occasion, and the latest in the long, proud and inspiring heritage of performance swimming at the University. Our thanks and appreciation go to East District in bringing EISM 2020 to fruition, and we wish all the competitors and officials every success this weekend, and in the year ahead. Jim Aitken MBE Director of Sport & Exercise, the University of Edinburgh WELCOME – CITY OF EDINBURGH I am delighted to welcome all spectators, officials and swimmers to the 2020 Edinburgh International Swim Meet here at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in the city of Edinburgh. This is the sixth year Edinburgh has hosted this event, and it will once again provide us with a wonderful opportunity to see some of the country’s top swimmers in action. Edinburgh is a city of great sporting traditions and has hosted many major sporting events in recent times, including a number of swimming and diving competitions. This event will continue this tradition, and help to raise the profile of aquatics in the city and beyond. Edinburgh is one of the most exciting and beautiful capital cities in the world, with its unique history and culture attracting millions of visitors each year. Our world- renowned summer festivals, complemented by our Christmas and Hogmanay celebrations, make it a vibrant and attractive place to visit all year round. The Royal Commonwealth Pool, overlooked by Edinburgh’s ancient volcano Arthur’s Seat, will once again provide an impressive backdrop for this event, and I am sure will give a real sense of occasion to all, whether competing or watching. On behalf of the City of Edinburgh, I hope you enjoy your time here, and I hope that this prestigious event once again delivers an unforgettable experience for all involved.
