DRPA, SJPC & PRPA Green Ports Initiative June 29, 2009 Regional Green Initiatives DVRPC Meeting Presented by: Bob Gross, Deputy CEO Delaware River Port Authority 1 GreenGreen PortsPorts Initiative:Initiative: WhoWho DRPA is facilitating the development of a Green Ports Initiative for the Ports of Philadelphia and Camden including port operations and transportation facilities owned and operated by DRPA/PATCO, South Jersey Port Corporation & Philadelphia Regional Port Authority. 2 GreenGreen PortsPorts Initiative:Initiative: WhatWhat ¾ Responsible, sustainable improvements including Administrative, Operations & Maintenance facilities owned & operated by the DRPA, SJPC and PRPA to lessen environmental and community impacts. It’s in our hands. 3 GreenGreen PortsPorts Initiative:Initiative: ProjectProject AreaArea ¾ Along the Delaware River between the Betsy Ross Bridge in Pennsauken & the Port of Salem in NJ & in PA from the Betsy Ross Bridge in Philadelphia to the Commodore Barry Bridge in Chester & along the PATCO High-Speed line from Lindenwold, NJ to Center City, PA 4 GreenGreen PortsPorts Initiative:Initiative: ExpertiseExpertise ¾ Weston Solutions, a highly respected engineering firm from West Chester, PA wiwillll assess options, develop a comprehensive report to develop strategies to address environmental impacts & identify potential greening initiatives. ¾ Will perform cost benefit analysis, public/private source of funds identification & develop public outreach strategies. ¾ Will provide recommendations for future projects and expenditures. 5 GreenGreen PortsPorts Initiative:Initiative: OverallOverall GoalsGoals ¾ Reduce environmental impacts ¾ Reduce energy consumption ¾ Explore clean renewable energy sources ¾ Provide sustainability & outreach to surrounding communities ¾ Craft innovative and comprehensive recommendations that consider the regulatory environment at the local, state & federal levels 6 GreenGreen PortsPorts Initiative:Initiative: ScopeScope ¾ Set agency’s emission reduction targets ¾ Propose ways to decrease impacts on local environment & surrounding communities of port operations ¾ Provide plan for use of clean alternative & renewable energy sources (wind, photovoltaic, chilled water storage, waste to energy) ¾ Provide energy efficiency plan for when retrofitting existing facilities or building new ¾ Promote sustainable building practices using US Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) ¾ Increase fuel efficiency of all fleet vehicles & transportation systems ¾ Increase opportunities to reduce solid waste stream & promote recycling ¾ Increase tree planting to help CO2 absorption 7 GreenGreen PortsPorts Initiative:Initiative: ScopeScope (con(con’’t)t) ¾ Identify innovative partnerships with public and private utility entities ¾ Inform the public, local residents, businesses and public agencies surrounding the port of GPI initiatives ¾ Identify funding opportunities for grants, incentives & third party investments ¾ Identify pilot and innovative and emerging technologies for future opportunities ¾ Identify ‘green job’ opportunities working with public & private sectors ¾ Establish a “Green Ribbon Panel” to help with further development & roll- out of the initiative. Include public & private members, port operators & users, leaders in energy & the environment, alternative energy, innovative land use, recycling and science. 8 GreenGreen PortsPorts Initiative:Initiative: WhyWhy ¾ Stewardship of our assets, resources and well-being and quality of life of our residents ¾ Interdependence as a global community- the right thing to do ¾ Port facilities have a significant economic and societal impacts and the DRPA, SJPC and PRPA are making it a priority to improve these positive environmental impacts through the initiative ¾ We also want to acknowledge the leadership and work of the DRPA, SJPC and PRPA prior to this initiative to be sensitive to these impacts. 9.
