"The Fiske Guide to Colleges" is an expansion of the popular "Selective Guide to Colleges," a best-selling college guide edited by Edward B. Fiske, education columnist of "The New York Times." Billed as "the book that goes beyond the statistics to straight talk about academics and campus life at colleges all over the country," the guide highlights nearly 300 of the country's 2,000 four-year colleges. UD received a rating of three for academics, which "suggests that the institu- tion is a solid one," a three rating for quality of life and a five rating for so- cial life. For a private university, its tuition falls in the "inexpensive" range. Described as a university that tends to the social, academic and spiritual needs of its students, UD prides itself on "the closeness and sense of community a~ mong its students and faculty members." The book praises UD's engineering, business and science offerings, notes its "luxury" accommodations in the Virginia W. Ketter- ing Residence Hall and mentions the football team's 1987 upset of Augustana College. "Founded by the Society of Mary, Dayton continues to emphasize that order's devotion to service," the guide notes. "More than 800 students in 20 different public service areas volunteer their time to a variety of activities that include tutoring local kids, reading to the blind and working with the terminally ill." Other Ohio colleges include: Antioch College, Case Western Reserve Universi- ty, University of Cincinnati, Denison University, Hiram College, Kent State Univer- sity, Kenyon College, Miami University, Oberlin College, Ohio State University, Ohio University, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wittenberg University and College of Wooster.
