The highlight has been the culminating point of the 1962 season in the form of the Annual Supper held at "The Crown” Hotel at Bookham on Friday 15th November when about 35 members and guests sat down to a very pleasant meal. The guests were mainly Old Boys belonging to other neighbouring clubs, together with the Surrey cricketer star "Billy" Smith (the brother of 'Smiler'). The only speech was a very comprehensive one from the skipper, Gerry Clow, while the Headmaster as chairman made the presentation awards to David Boxall, Sandy Hughes, Gordon Palmer and Alan Howells for their individual achievements with bat and ball. Sandy later had successful evening in flogging the admirable booklets he had produced on the season’s cricket. Altogether one of the most pleasant O.D. functions of the year. RAMBLES “An enjoyable ramble was held on Sunday 19th November, despite the showery weather. We went to Coldharbour for lunch via The Nower, Squire's Farm, Abinger Forest and Coldharbour Common. After lunch we went on to Leith Hill Tower, down to Friday Street via Wotton Common, along the Tillingbourne Valley and then on to Westcott. The next Ramble will be held on January 2 9 th starting at B o x h i l l Sta t i o n at 10.25am. There will not be a ramble i n because I imagine everyone will be too busy with preparations for Christmas to spend a whole day walking. Don’t forget to bring a packed lunch on Jan 20th”. (June Astridge) FOOTBALL CLUB The 1st XI are now through to the 4th round of the Surrey Junior Cup, and meet Warlingham Reserves away on October 1st. In the 3rd round they finally beat Woodland Albion after extra time, having previously drawn with them 3 -3 (also after extra time). The 2nd XI have been taking a point from each recent League game but broke the monotony with a fine win against Sutton. The 3rd XI have averaged a point a game for the last few weeks, including a 13-2 win over Strandians. The 4th XI fixtures have been limited due to injuries and the non- availability of grounds owing to cup replays. However, there is a reasonably full fixture list for them for December and January. We hope to see all 0.D.s on 15th December when we have 3 matches against the School. The 1st XI will be at Pixham and the 3rd and 5th at the School. Our “Grand Christmas Draw” is now well under way and we do hope you are all rallying round in the purchase of the 6d tickets which have been distributed. John E.N Walker (who left D.H.S in 1916) still reads the Magpie from beginning to end each month and would like to take part in a get-together of old High School boys, if it can be arranged. Could any D.H.S. 0.D.s who would similarly be interested in, say, a dinner party please get in touch with the Editor, so that he can investigate what can be suitably arranged? Gerard Moss (1949-55), previously of Langley House, Rookery Hi11 and 30 Culverhay, Ashtead, completed his Ph.D.at Cambridge and is now a post-doctoral research associate at Columbia University,New York. His wife Jennifer (nee Radford l949 - 1957), late of 18 Myrtle Road, Dorking, is working at the University Medical Centre nearby. Both will be returning to England next September. We learn that Maureen Collins is at present in New Orleans, while Brian D. Stenner is now Minister at St John’s Free Church, Westcott. NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL. The main event has been Speech Day which was held at the Dorking Halls on the evening of 20th November – the night we would get a fall of snow! Mr J. E. Pratt. the Chairman of the Governors, again presided, while Mr M.L. Jacks, M.A., formerly Headmaster of Hill School .and Director of the Department of Education at Oxford, found great pleasure in presenting. yet over a hundred more prizes, before enlightening everyone present on the ancient origins of schools, grammar. The Head master had previously in his annual report outlined the School's achievements in its many departments during the year - a School of 650 pupils and 40 staff! The evening had, of necessity, to follow the usual pattern, but we rather enjoyed the delightful singing of the Madrlgal Society. Did you know that the School's Recorder croup and Choir were successful in winning the Choral and Orchestra Cup at the Dorking Festival? We trust you have made yourself a promise to buy tickets for the School's performance of "Jonah And The Whale" at the School on December 6th, 7th and 8th. The School's first edition of its newspaper has unfortunately run into a printing hold-up but should soon be making its appearance. Otherwise we have little else outstanding to report - and who can "outstand" in that and on the football field? THE "MAGPIE". We have to announce that there will not after all be a 'January issue of the "Magpie" as the collection of material, its editing and typing, and the subsequent mailing cannot readily be done over Xmas and the New Year. Instead of its delayed publication about mid- January it was felt better to re-start with the Feb. lst issue, for which all MSS should be sent to us by Jan. 20th. We therefore trust that apart from just the few of us, you all will also have an enjoyable and work-free Holiday at Christmas and the best of good fortune in the New Year. .
