PON a s t r a it an island , in some miles in length, i connecting the Upper with Lower Lough Erne , w and where the waters , flowing do n from the former, w m separate into two narro strea s , the town of Ennis killen took its rise , in the reign of King James the First . Before that period there stood at the south - west part - c u (with a broad dit h or canal abo t it) , a castle, which for the two previous centuries , had been the scene of many sanguinary frays between the hostile septs of ’ O D o n n ell c of Donegal, and Maguire , under the hief tain of Fermanagh . Ca it hlen The name as spelled in Irish , is Inis or “ a ithlin n i . e. C , , the Isle of Kehlen In the Annals of Clonmacnoise it is stated , that this island took its name Cet hl en from (Kehlen) wife of Balor, of the great blows, chief of the Fomorians, a race of pirates who infested the coasts of Ireland , and oppressed the inhabitants far into the interior. By the Irish authorities it is always ’ - Cethlen n Cethlen s . called Inis , ( Isle ) E LLE LO A GO 2 NNISKI N NG . The following extracts are selected from ‘ A nnals of ’ “ 1 the Four Masters A . The Castle of Ennis ” D o n n a ll killen was given up to Ballagh Maguire . 1 2 44 , Maguire (Thomas Oge) gave up the Castle of Ceithlin n S eit hlin n Inis (or Innis g ) to Philip Maguire, 1 0 after letting out Edmond . 5 3 , Maguire, John, D ew son of Philip , son of Thomas More , Gilla , the c c hoi e of the Chieftains of Ireland in his time , the most o f merciful and humane of the Irish, the best pr tector o u his co ntry and lands, the most warlike opponent of ini c c n mi al tribes and neighbours , the best in j urisdi tio a n d t authority, regulation, both in Church and S ate, died in his fortress at Enniskillen , on Sunday, 7 Kal .
