Rams 94 76 533 DRAFT EWES & RAMS Again, a lot more plain ewes on offer than there were for heavy ewes due to the weather. The good meat ewes saw several pens over £90 to a top of £108 from David Fowler of Week St Mary then £97 sold by Mr R Endacott of Spreyton. 499 BREEDING EWES A large crowd of buyers present and the trade was very fast throughout with the top being £162 for two pens of Suffolk x 2T from Jim Mann of Higher Winscott followed by Jimmy Tucker, High Bickington who sold two pens of Suffolk x 2T at £155. Numerous pens of Suffolk x 2T between £120 to £135. Charollais flock age ewes from Mr R Endacott realised £120. 116 STORE LAMBS A slightly stronger trade. Top on the day was £63 from Mr David Allin, of Dolton. 265 CALVES & STIRKS Auctioneer: James Morrish 07814 010133 Another superb entry of 265 heads sold to a packed sales gallery of buyers with new purchasers ready to spend. Top call of the day was £510 for the best of a nice run of 12 week old British Blue bulls in from Jeremy Ovens of Halwill with others from the same farm at £495. Messrs Nicholls sold their British Blue stirks at £485 (x3) whilst the best of a quality line up of 8 week old stirks from Messrs Bray of Parracombe topping at an impressive £395. Other leading stirks came in from Messrs Dilling of Highampton at £390 with the best heifer stirks from B G Nicholls at £436. Best Aberdeen Angus heifers came in from Roy, Lorna and Paul Herniman of St Giles a £300. The trade for baby calves (under 42 days) was back up nearly to where it was pre – St Peters Fair. Top of the baby British Blues hit £395 for the Bray Family of Exmoor with Mike Hopper of Whitstone seeing a monster of a trade for his very young British Blue bull hitting £340. Tim Issac reached £340 for his best with Messrs Veale at £340. Nick Jones of Saltash sold 3 cracking baby calves to £335 with Alan Pomeroy at £305. Best of the Limousins reached £345 for Messrs Wade of Braworthy. Best baby heifers came in from P H Collins Partnership at £300 with Messrs Wearing of Tavistock at £265. Best baby Hereford heifers hit £130 for Trevor Lane of Helston in West Cornwall. Holstein bulls sold well at a top of £180 for Messrs Ayles with the top 10 all up and over the £100 mark. Best 4 week old Holsteins reached £100 for A & P Nancekivell with Gemma Smale close up at £85. Speaking after the sale, Kivells calf auctioneer said ‘it is fantastic to see the calf pens full week after week. Trade is back up where it belongs with plenty of buyers keen to spend. It is superb to see over 1,000 calves sold at Holsworthy in July and all is set well for the good number (and prices) to continue’. Top 10 bull calves to £510 averaging £446. Top 10 heifer calves to £435 averaging £349 265 calves (including Holsteins) averaging £237. The winners of the Genus vouchers for the highest priced calves under 42 days went to RB & NJ Veale of Halwill with a British Blue bull calf sired by Moorsley DJ making £340. The heifer section was won by RG, LA & SR Wearing, Wheal Maria, Tavistock with a British Blue fetching £265 sired by Moorsley Anderson. A good run of 24 month old British Blue x steers from Mr W Prouse saw a top of £1085 (2) with other bunches at £960 and £940 with Aberdeen Angus’ and Herefords from the same farm fetching £1000. With forward heifers topping at £1005 for a 28 month old Limousin from Messrs McCowan of Frithelstock with other at £995. Younger grass continentals 16 – 18 month olds saw several bunches of steers at £650 - £800, heifers at £700 - £925 for two Limousins from Mr J Melville of Trentworthy. Young cattle with shape still in demand with 12 month old steers exceeding £600 and heifers to £580 but those stale small x bred continental heifers to place £380 - £450. Another strong trade for the stronger Holstein steers to a top of £820 for four 22 month old steers from Messrs Yeo Vale Farms of Bideford. More cattle could have sold well today as several buyers left empty handed. Beef cows topped at 126p/kg for a Limousin from Messrs Thorne of St Giles realising £859 with others to 121p/kg. Those Holsteins with flesh at 95p/kg – 97p/kg for a 764 kilo cow from Messrs Mitchell of Herdicott to £741 plain/old out of parlour cows at 65p/kg – 75p/kg. Bulls topped at 101p/kg for a 890 kilo Charolais from Messrs Halls of Altarnun. More would have sold well this week. Some well finished cattle this week saw a good trade to a top of 178p/kg for a 680 kilo Saler steer from Mr E Partridge of Bradworthy with others at 177p/kg. Top Price per head was £1434 for a well finished 822 kilo steer from Messrs Axford of Derriton who also had top price per kilo heifer at 178p/kg for a 650 kilo British Blue.
