ShContemporary helps stimulate contemporary art market in Asia From September 10th -13th ShContemporary08 is on the art agenda of collectors, museum professionals, and media from throughout the world who plan on attending the second edition of the contemporary art fair. Since the first successful edition of the fair in 2007, ShContemporary has stimulated the international contemporary art market and served as a catalyst for Western galleries to open exhibition spaces in China. Not long after the first edition of ShContemporary last September, Michael Schultz, a Berlin based gallery opened a space in Beijing and exhibits well known Western and Chinese artists. This past July, James Cohan Gallery of New York, opened a new space in the the historic French Concession of Shanghai. The gallery is showing dynamic international artists known in China such as Bill Viola, Nam June Paik, Roxy Paine, Yinka Shonibare, and those that are just being introduced to China. The gallery will be returning as an exhibitor to ShContemporary and in their booth will also be showing MBE, Yinka Shonibare, Wim Wenders, Bill Viola, Nam June Paik, and Hiraki Sawa who will be included in Best of Discovery, the curated section within the fair. Sawa, the Japanese video artist has created a new work especially for this installation which addresses the concept of “home“ and the physical and mental habitation of space. Sharing the same passion and commitment to Asia, New York‘s Pace Wildenstein Gallery opened a space in Beijing during the first week of August.. The inaugural exhibition “Meetings” featured Western and Asian artists, such as Chuck Close, Alex Katz, Lucas Samaras, Tim Eitel, also 2 Chinese artists Zhang Huan and Zhang Xiaogang. Committing to its presence in China, Pace Wildenstein plans to take part in ShContemporary for the first time. With the success of ShContemporary last year and the focus it has brought to The Asia Pacific region, the upcoming edition will include many returning galleries (over 40%) and new galleries from throughout the world who want to have a presence in the emerging new art market in Asia. (See exhibitor list below) Nine galleries from the United States will be joining over 130 participating galleries from 26 countries in the upcoming edition of the fair . Returning US galleries include, James Cohan, I-20, Marlborough, Max Protetch, Jack Tilton, and Walsh. Three of the following New York galleries will be joining Shcontemporary08 this year. Lehmann Maupin will devote their booth to works of digital artist Jennifer Steinkamp. The Los Angeles based artist continues to explore ideas of space and motion with these works and is applying new media technology to create illusionistic environments. On view will be Steinkamp‘s oeuvre including Dervish, Rapunzel, and Formation. Also shown will be new work by Tracy Emin alongside works on paper by the Korean artist, Lee Bul. Pace Beijing will present the Chinese artists Zhang Huan and Zhang Xiaogang as well as their Western blue chip artists including Alexander Calder, John Chamberlain, George Condo,Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenburg, Kiki Smith, Oldenburg, Joel Shapiro, Tara Donovan. Moti Hasson’s focus will be on three artists: Koreas born Jina Moon‘s, featuring Megaxiscape, a 32 foot-long painting on Hanji paper that drapes down from the ceiling and across the floor. Shuli Hallak recent photographs document cargo in its state of transit between production and consumption. Photographic portraits by Carl Fischer mostly from the sixties and seventies, often made on assignment for advertising and editorial use, including Warhol and the Factory.
