The duty station for this position may be either at the Baldwin/White Cloud Ranger Station in Baldwin, Michigan or at the . The Huron- Manistee National Forests offers diverse challenges and opportunities for a Silviculturist given the unique geologic and historic activities that has shaped this landscape. The Silvicultural position is pivotal to assisting the Forests in meeting our Land Management objectives as vegetation management is our primary tool for restoring and providing a diverse range of sustainable habitats for wildlife, including endangered species, and unique ecosystems; supporting forest health; and providing wood fiber. Visit our Website at http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/hmnf/ Major Duties: The West Zone Silviculturist is a member of the two west side (Manistee National Forest) District Staffs and will report to either the Baldwin/White Cloud Ranger District or Cadillac/Manistee Ranger District Timber Management Assistant. This position serves as a Silviculturist. Therefore, the incumbent must either be a certified Silviculturist upon placement or able to complete certification as a Silviculturist within three years of the date of entry on duty. Makes on-the-ground examinations and analyses of forest areas to determine which areas require short- or long-range cultural treatment in terms of the total ecosystem. Provides advice, technical support, and evaluation of proposed and ongoing timber sale programs to prevent loss of timber productivity and damage to the environment. Reviews and approves project plans for special administrative studies of silvicultural methods and techniques in planting, seeding, site preparation, timber stand improvement, and tree and shrub improvement projects. Plans, coordinates, and administers the technical phases of forest area control of animals, insects, or diseases affecting reforestation and regeneration programs. Serves as a full member of the two unit management teams and shares in setting unit goals and objectives and developing overall unit plans. Plans, coordinates, and evaluates the timber stand improvement program; prescribes cutting practices based on an examination of stand conditions and esthetic or other resource requirements. Inspects all phases of reforestation and stand improvement projects; appraises the degree of conformance with policies, procedures, and silvicultural plans; and recommends corrective action as required. Participates in preparation and review of environmental analysis reports and environmental impact statements. Coordinates silvicultural needs with other resource specialists. Maintains liaison with employees of Federal and State governments, local officials, and private organizations or landowners who are affected by, or have a shared interest in, the Forest land management practices and problems in the forest area; provides technical assistance on mutual reforestation problems. Plans, coordinates, and conducts training on silvicultural principles and practices, including planting and seeding procedures; ground and seedbed preparation techniques; timber stand improvement techniques, and the influence of various factors on the kind and timing of silvicultural treatment necessary and appropriate to achieve multiple-use land management objectives. Qualification Requirements – GS-11: ne year of progressively responsible forester or other work at the GS-09 level, which provided the knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position being filled. The incumbent will either need to be or can demonstrate that they would likely become certified as a USFS Silviculturist within three (3) years of entry on duty. The successful candidate will have the ability to effectively support both District Teams in planning vegetation projects and completing National Environmental Policy Act documents, as well as managing independent Silvicultural tasks and maintaining or enhancing internal and external partnerships with such partners as researchers and other State agencies. The incumbent should have a practices and forestry, ability to communicate well both in writing and verbally, ability to actively support and cooperate with internal and external partners, as well as ability to independently plan necessary work and complete all necessary documentation and databases of record.
