Parent and Pupil Handbook Parent and Pupil Handbook 2019-2020 The information in this Parent and Pupil Handbook includes policies and procedures which will be updated from time to time. Each updated policy takes the place of all earlier versions and renders them obsolete. The Parent and Pupil Handbook is posted on the Parent Portal. A hardcopy edition of the handbook is issued each July to parents of new pupils, and throughout the subsequent year to parents of prospective pupils; additional copies are available, on request, from the School Office. To see all the latest regulatory policies, parents are asked regularly to visit the school website (About Us: School Policies). All policies are available, on request, from the School Office. 1 RYE ST ANTONY Pullen’s Lane Oxford OX3 0BY Telephone: 01865 762802 Email: [email protected] Website: www.ryestantony.co.uk Rye St Antony School Limited Registered Charity No 309685 2 CONTENTS Page Aims of the School 1 Board of Governors 2 Staff 2-4 Governing Body 5-7 Senior Leadership Team and Extended Management Team 7 Heads of Department 7 Housemistresses 7 Form Tutors 8 Absences 9-10 Day Pupils 9 Boarding Pupils 10 Admissions Procedure 10-11 After-School Care in the Prep School 11 After-School Arrangements in the Senior School 12 Alcohol, Tobacco and the Misuse of Drugs Policy 12-14 Anti-Bullying Policy 14-18 Assembly 18 Assessment and Examinations Policy 18-27 Assessment Policy 18-24 Pre-Prep and Prep Departments 20-21 Senior School 21-24 Procedure for the Issue of Results 22 Standardised Test Scores Middle Years Information System (MidYIS) Appeals Against Internal Assessment (External 23-24 Qualifications) Examinations Policy 24-27 Behaviour Management Policy 27-33 Boarding 33-34 Daily Routine 33 Dormitories 33 Duvets/Linen 33 Exeats 33 Health and Pastoral Care 33-34 Laundry 34 Newspapers 34 Personal Electronic Equipment 34 Pocket Money 34 Telephone 34 Bursaries Policy 34-37 Careers Education and Guidance Policy 37-38 Care of the Environment: Green Statement 38 Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy 38-53 Complaints Procedures 54-57 Complaints Procedure for Pupils 54-55 Complaints Procedure for Parents 55-57 Curriculum Policy 57-67 Data Retention and Storage Policy 67-69 Development Fund 69 3 Disability Inclusion, Special Educational Needs and Learning 69 Support Policy (including English as an Additional Language Policy and Enrichment Policy) Duke of Edinburgh’s Award 69-70 Educational Visits Policy 70-71 Education Guardianship Policy 71-73 E-Newsletter 74 Equal Opportunities for Pupils Policy 74-75 Equipment 75 Extra-Curricular Clubs and Activities Policy 75-76 Extra Tuition 76-77 Fee Policy 77 Food Committee 78 Health and Safety 79 Health and Safety Committee 79 Health Care and First Aid Policy 79-85 Higher Education 86 Housemothers 86 House System 86 Information Technology (IT) Acceptable Use Policy 87-89 Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Acceptable Use Policy 89-91 Insurance of Personal Property 91 King Award 91 Libraries 92 Magazine 92 Messages for Pupils 92 Messages for Staff 92 Parents’ Committee 92-93 Parents’ Meetings 93 Prefects 94 Peer Mentoring Policy: Housemother System 94 Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHEE) and 94-96 Citizenship Policy Positive Working Environment 96 Prep Policy 97 Preventing Radicalisation Policy 98-101 Privacy Notice 101-106 Pupil Disciplinary Record Policy 106 Pupil Supervision Policy 106-109 Religious Life 109-110 Reports and References Policy 110-111 Scholarships 2019 111-113 School Council 113 School Day 113 School Development Plan 113 School Policies 114 Smoke-Free Environment 114 Sport 114 Telephone Numbers 114 Travel Arrangements 115 Uniform and Dress Code 115-117 Vehicle Access 117 4 Visitors and Visiting Speakers Policy 118-121 Work Experience Policy 121 Term Dates for 2019-2020 122 Provisional Term Dates for 2020-2021 123 5 AIMS OF THE SCHOOL Central to the school’s understanding of education is the recognition that each pupil is an individual whose talents and interests are to be identified and fostered. Happiness in life comes through self-fulfilment: all pupils, therefore, are helped to discover who they are and who they have it in them to become; they are encouraged to challenge themselves and develop the qualities of intellect and character – independence, wisdom and generosity of outlook, determination and perseverance, resilience, vision and ambition – that will lead them into responsible and rewarding adult life. All members of the school community are asked to observe the following principles: Education and learning are gifts to be prized and put to use. Each person’s talents need to be acknowledged and given opportunity to develop. It is the entitlement of everyone in the school to be treated with respect, kindness and fairness. There is a spiritual dimension to life which is to be recognised and fostered. All should be mindful of their responsibilities to the school community and alert too to their responsibilities within the wider community – local, national and international. The school aims to provide an environment in which the full potential of each pupil can be achieved, and the curriculum is designed to give scope to the whole spectrum of abilities and interests represented in the school. Pupils are taught to think and question; they are helped to understand their strengths and weaknesses; they are encouraged to accept challenges and learn initiative and how to work effectively, whether independently or within a team. They are asked to contribute to decisions that affect the school, thus learning how to play an active part in their school community, in preparation for their work in the future communities to which they will belong. As a Catholic lay foundation, the school aims to be always faithful to its identity as ‘a school which genuinely reflects the religious, artistic, moral and intellectual ethos of the Catholic tradition’. The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. 1 STAFF LIST BOARD OF GOVERNORS Mr Sean Calnan (Trustee) Mrs Shuna McGregor, MSc, BA, CQSW (Trustee and Chairman*) Dr Tom Czepiel, BMus, DPhil, PGDip LATHE Mr Tim Morton (Trustee and Vice-Chairman) Mr Simon Detre, BA Mr David Parke (Trustee) Mrs Sue Hampshire Mr Ray Potts, BSc, FCA Rev Dr John Jackson, DPhil Mr Andrew Rattue, MA, MA *Correspondence to the Chairman should be sent to her at the School: Rye St Antony, Pullen’s Lane, Oxford OX3 0BY ______________________________________________________________________________________________ SENIOR LEADERSHIP TEAM ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF Headmistress Headmistress’s Personal Assistant Mrs Sarah Ryan, MA, MA Mrs Elizabeth Cheeseman Deputy Head Registrar Miss Joanne Croft, Maîtrise, BA Mrs Fern Williams Bursar Administrative Assistant Mrs Teresa Hudson, MBA (MP), DMS, MAAT Miss Ellie Hicken, BA Director of Studies External Relations Co-ordinator Mr Chris Hack, MSci, MA, MA Education Mrs Nikki Gracey, BSc Head of Boarding Finance Officer Miss Helen Tomlinson, BEd Mrs Nimmy Sanhotra Head of Prep Finance Assistant Mrs Kate Di Costanzo, BA Ms Erika Sziva, BA, AdvDip in Accounting Head of Sixth Form Human Resources Manager Dr Sean Willis, BA, MA, PhD Ms Ellen Phelips, BA, Assoc CIPD HEADS OF SECTION IT NETWORK MANAGER Mr Drew Pocock St Antony’s (Years 7-9) Miss Emily Pitchford, BA EXAMINATIONS OFFICER Mrs Katherine Watkins, BA, MSc Our Lady’s (Years 10 and 11) Miss Lorraine Cunnington, BSocSci LIBRARIAN Mrs Florence Benfeghoul, BA, MA RELIGIOUS LIFE CO-ORDINATOR Mrs Anna Mancari-Rees, BA ASSISTANT LIBRARIAN Miss Anna Samuels SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS CO-ORDINATOR Miss Nicole DeRushie, MA LABORATORY TECHNICIAN Miss Heidi Breitsprecher, BSc SCHOOL NURSE Mrs Sue Fennell, RN SITE SUPERVISOR Mr Steve Timson HOUSEMISTRESSES Miss Celia Peck, BEd: Physical Education CARETAKER AND MAINTENANCE Miss Lauren Hichens, BA, Cert.TESOL, CELTYL Mr Tom Rapley Miss Gemma Bown, BA Ms Rosie Gardiner HOUSEKEEPER Miss Eleanor Mulholland, BA Mrs Frances Robins Miss Antonina Steven, BA ASSISTANT HOUSEKEEPER Miss Wendy Rolfe 2 TEACHING ASSISTANTS CATERING Ms Alison Coveley, Cert Ed, Level 3 Early Years Care Elior UK Mrs Angela Jenkins, Level 3 Early Years Care and Education Mrs Hayley Rapley, Level 3 Early Years Care and Education Ms Alice Riddel, Level 2 Support Work in Schools MAINTENANCE AND GROUNDS Mrs Paula Coombs, Gardener Mr Stephen Foley, Maintenance LEARNING SUPPORT TEACHERS Mr Michael Wiskin, Groundsman Mrs Sophy Blandy, BA, TEFL, CELTA Mr Martin Wrigley, Minibus Driver Mrs Caroline Byron-Paterson, BA, Cert.TLSLD, MA Mrs Elizabeth Eldridge, BSc, Ad Dip, PsyC Mrs Sally Maddison, BSc Mrs Anne Williams, FAETC, TEFL, ACoT (Tesol) VISITING TEACHER OF BALLET Miss Madeleine Hedley Ford, BPhil, Dip RADA VISITING TEACHERS OF MUSIC Mrs Maddy Aldis-Evans, ABSM, BA, PGDip (Perf), PGDip (AdPerf): Oboe Mr Ivan Best, BA, Dip Mus, LTCL, ABSRM: Trumpet Dr Elizabeth Chivers, MA, DPhil, PGDip: Violin ,Viola Mr Tim Dawes, BA, MSc: Jazz Instruments Mr Paul Foster, LTCL: Saxophone Mrs Cassandra Jane, BMus: Singing Mrs Margaret Jones, MEd, BA: Piano Mr James Maltby, BMus, MMus(Perf): Clarinet Mrs Fiona Stuart, MA, ARCM: Piano, Cello Miss Serenna Wagner, BA, PGDip, MMus (Perf): Singing Mr Paul Wisby, ALCM, LLCM(TD), DipVCM: Guitar FULL-TIME TEACHING STAFF Miss Emma Archbold, BA: Biology Miss Kimberly Bland, BA: Physical Education, Activities Director, House System Co-ordinator Mr Neil Brown, ALAM, LGSM, MA: Head
