Chief Okemos District 2018 Spring Camporee Activity List Units/patrols will be able to sign up for specific activities to fill their day’s schedule Big Activities (70 minutes each) Treasure Hunting (Geocaching) Gold coins will be hidden in a geocache around Fitzgerald Park. Scouts are challenged to find the treasure chest and retrieve one of the gold coins. Meets First Class Rank Requirement 4b and can be used for several requirements for Geocaching Merit Badge. Scouts can use a GPS unit or their phone with the Geocaching app. Pathfinding (Orienteering) 10-point, mile-long orienteering course set up at Fitzgerald Park along the trails. Meets rank requirements: Second Class 3a, First Class 4a, and counts as one orienteering activity for requirement #6 in Orienteering Merit Badge with the opportunity to complete more. Scouts need to bring a compass to participate and have basic knowledge about using it. Archery When you are trapped in a foreign land, will you be able to use a bow to provide for your clan? We have target practice with bows and arrows to test your abilities. Tomahawks Try your hand at target practice using tomahawks. Not every Viking will have the skill to wield an axe. Small Activities (30 minutes each) Pillage and Plunder Game Set up like Capture the Flag, scouts will compete against each other to capture the loot, which will involved multiple objects of various sizes and weights. Strategy required! Hammer Throw Are you pure of soul? How far can you throw Thor’s hammer? Scouts will test their skills throwing a wooden hammer at targets. Rune Tags Learn how to write your name and what your name means in Nordic Runes. Fire Building Scouts will learn to start a fire use three ways other than matches, and then compete to see who can burn through a rope the fastest. This will meet requirement #6 of the Wilderness Survival merit badge. If scouts have a flint striker, they are welcome to bring it. Catapults and Trebuchets Scouts will build catapults out of popsicle sticks and rubber bands. Then they will have the opportunity to fire a tennis ball from a model trebuchet at a “castle” made from boxes. Rank Relay Race Covering rank requirements from Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class, prove that your troop is the fastest and most knowledgeable. (Will not include lashings or fusing.) Sled Race How strong is your Viking clan? Build your ship, bring it to the Viking Venture and find out! Base of ship should be a plastic toboggan, but there’s no limit on duct tape or cardboard. No runners or wheels. The troops will then choose up to 4 scouts to pull their scoutmaster (or assistant scoutmaster) as far as they can. Light weight division: Combined team weight is LESS than 720 lbs including Scoutmaster. Heavy weight division: Combined team weight is GREATER than 720 lbs including Scoutmaster. Wilderness Survival Overnight Scouts will spend Saturday night in an improvised shelter and return in the morning in time for flags (It is suggested that they pack personal items Saturday night before the overnight). An opportunity for scouts to complete requirements #5 and #8 of the Wilderness Survival merit badge (with the possibility to earn more). Scouts will need a wilderness survival kit to use to build their shelter (and water bottle, bug spray, long sleeved shirt and pants). .
