Cumbolo (LP, 200.388 Culture Virgin 200.388 Netherlands 1979 Album) Comments about Cumbolo - Culture Felhann Cumbolo is without a doubt one of Culture's All Time Greatest Albums. Like on Two Sevens Clash, International Herb or Harder Than The Rest everything fits perfectly together. The unique Lead Vocals of the late great Joseph Hill in his Prime, the Harmonies by his two Background Singers and the fantatsic production by Sonia Pottinger in Jamaica's Studios with only the best musicians of Kingston involved. The arrangements are a plaesure to listen to and the lyrics, yes that's where Cumbolo earns it's Laurels. i will only concentrate on the last 3 Songs on Side TWO here. THIS TRAIN uses the melodie and refrain of the adapted Folk Song Bunny Wailer already used on his Debut album Blackheart Man. This Train carries no Unholy, this Train Leads Straight To Mount Zion. Songs Of Hope with a strong vision of Rasta FarI. The following PAY DAY is my favourite. Here Joseph Hill dreams aboutr what he will do when the Pay Day has come for all the retired slave. Means he wiats for the finacial resolution, that gives Sons and daughters of slaves a financial solution for 400 years of Captivity and Hard Work in the boiling sun. We all know this day will never come, but when i hear Culture sing about it, hope that this day will soon come seems round the corner. the Closing song brings the listener down to earth with his warning "Mind Who You Beg For Help". But this song with it's upbeat melodie and fine delivery also makes me feel good : Full of hope and memories of sunny weather. Since the late seventies to this day, when i listened to Cumbolo on my iTunes , his magic never ceased. Joseph Hill died this summer, but his Legacy, his music still lingers on and will be here forever, just like Bob Marley he was important as an International Reggae Ambassador. Rest In Peace and let your Songs be sung for a long long time to come...
