Three bedrock aquifer systems are identified for Dubois County based on 7 s a W 23 24 y a o d 8 r k E 21 a 23 o N d 22 r d bedrock surface lithology. The susceptibility of bedrock aquifer systems to surface contamination is largely o 20 k 22 a F t Portersville c o as 22 19 i E 24 E R 21 H dependent on the type and thickness of the overlying sediments. Just as recharge for bedrock aquifers cannot exceed 5 y 2 t Norton 9 n that of overlying unconsolidated deposits, susceptibility to surface contamination will not exceed that of overlying u d o a C o deposits. It is composed primarily of shale, limestone, and sandstone, and consists of three groups. The three groups a u d o o T. 1 N. F C st comprising this bedrock aquifer system differ in their percentages of shale, limestone, and sandstone. Most of the T. 1 N. a T. 1 S. E E d water will be found in the limestone and sandstone beds. Yields for domestic wells typically range from 3 to 15 gpm. In limited areas some karst has developed in the limestone beds. 3 l 5 F 2 k e D e e K R l e These conditions warrant considering the aquifer system as a whole to be somewhat susceptible to contaminants t r S t i C introduced at and near land surface. L h County Road 500 N c r Patoka River i B Public Access Site 8 9 10 11 12 11 12 7 Pennsylvanian--Raccoon Creek Group Aquifer System 11 12 7 8 9 10 10 12 7 8 9 10 Dubois 11 County Road 450 N Patoka Lake Aquifers contained within this Lower Pennsylvanian age bedrock have generally low yielding capability. The outcrop/subcrop of the Raccoon Creek Group covers most of Dubois County. This aquifer system consists, in W S d S 0 a ascending order of the Mansfield, Brazil, and Staunton Formations. Shale and sandstone compose approximately 95 R 0 o 6 R 14 13 5 6 18 17 o d 13 16 15 14 16 15 c percent of the group; and clay, coal, and limestone make up nearly all the rest. Shale is more common than sandstone. a 17 15 14 14 13 18 z 13 o 18 17 u C R 16 15 The sandstone is mostly fine grained. y t Mill C n reek u o C In general, the Raccoon Creek Group Aquifer System is considered a dependable ground-water source in Dubois B B ea D a W Buffalo Pond i County, with many wells producing from the basal sandstone of the Mansfield Formation. Yields for domestic wells ve u l 0 b e r o 22 0 y Managed Area C i typically range from 2 to 10 gpm. Potentially higher yielding wells may be obtained locally for light industrial, 8 r s C e R d 24 e 19 20 o 21 r 23 a k 22 23 24 a e Patoka irrigation, farm operation, or small municipal usage of up to 50 gpm. o Ireland 20 21 22 23 24 21 22 23 24 19 d e R 19 20 k Lake y k t B e n P e a u r k u o Water quality is generally good, but in areas of surface and underground coal mining, some localized contamination o C e l e s C e t r o r n may have occurred. Natural water quality gets progressively worse (more salty) in wells ranging in depth from 250 to a County Road 200 N C l C C r F r e r 450 feet as the strata dip beneath younger rocks to the southwest. a e e e t e l k l k t t 27 T i A e 27 L 25 30 29 28 28 26 d 26 28 e 27 27 26 25 30 29 k r 25 e Pennsylvanian--Carbondale Group Aquifer System 26 25 30 re C 29 C Beaver d r ke Creek Lake e o e ro k ad C Ro Jasper rth o C C sw ll o This Middle Pennsylvanian bedrock aquifer system consists in ascending order of the Linton, Petersburg, and the o E u u S R 164 n n 33 t y t Dugger Formations. Most of the thickness of this group consists of variable shales and sandstones with some coal y R R 35 36 31 32 33 34 35 34 o and limestone. The only part of the Carbondale Group present in Dubois County is the Linton Formation. West of o 31 34 35 36 33 a 34 a Celestine 36 36 31 32 32 d d 35 9 Dubois County, where more data from well records are available, the Carbondale Group is considered a minor 4 0 0 0 0 E ground-water source with most wells producing from the thicker sandstone and coal units. W T. 1 S. T. 1 S. T. 2 S. T. 2 S. Gr een Water quality is generally good and the aquifer system is not very susceptible to contamination from the land er Ro ad surface. However, in areas of surface and underground coal mining, some localized contamination may have Pa to 3 2 1 3 2 1 ka 1 6 5 4 6 5 4 occurred. Approximately 50 percent of the coal seam has been removed, leaving the potential for storage of substantial ny R R o E y a amounts of water in the larger mines. Although the Division has no records of wells drilled into these mines, yields t d 5 n Maltersville W 2 u 0 0 of a few hundred gpm are possible.
