It is a moment of great honour for me to celebrate the 64th Annual Day of our Kirori Mal College with all of you — Honourable Chief Guest, Mr. Ashwini Kumar Chand; respected Guests of Honour — Professor Mannmohan, Mr. Santosh Kumar, and Mr. Amaresh Awasthi; our Special Guests — Shri Raj Kumar Bhatia, Shri T. S. Kripanidhi, Dr. Kirti Ranjan, Lt. General I. J. Singh, Prof. Nilika Mehrotra, and Justice A.K. Patnaik; dear colleagues and staff members, and, of course, my dear students, I warmly welcome all of you to this very special occasion of the Annual Day 2018. Indeed, it is very special day as it encapsulates all the 365 days that have gone into the making of the last academic year. It is a day on which we count our blessings and achievements. Students are felicitated for academic excellence and for their achievements in extracurricular activities. Much as the college is proud of its award winners, it also wants to tell each student out there that s/he is part of the KMC family and will always be cherished by us. As you all know, KMC values and nurtures the bond between students and teachers. Friends, we are indeed privileged to have Mr. Ashwani Kumar, an IPS officer, with us today as our Chief Guest. Mr. Ashwani is a KMC alumnus of the 1993 Geography Honours batch. We are also fortunate to have in our midst our Guests of Honour — Professor Manmohan, Mr. Santosh Kumar, and Mr.Amaresh Awasthi. Mr. Santosh Kumar is also a KMC alumnus of the 1993 Statistics Honours batch. He is presently a Joint Secretary with the Indian Audit and Accounts Services. Mr. Amaresh Awasthi has again been a KMC alumnus. He graduated in Hindi Honours in 1991 from our College. Currently, he is the CEO of Kleenwel Enviro Engineering Services. All of you have, indeed, done the College proud by your achievements and by your contribution to society. I thank all of you, our Chief Guest, our Guests of Honour and our Special Guests for taking time out from your busy schedule to grace this occasion. 2016-17 was an important year in the history of our College. KMC became a NAAC accredited A+ graded multidisciplinary College. 2016 also saw the completion of our new Academic Auditorium which continues to host numerous academic events across disciplines. 2017 - 18 has been no less significant. ANNUAL REPORT 2017-2018 3 KIRORI MAL COLLEGE The year marked an important milestone in the journey of our College towards further progress in all spheres. The NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework) ranked KMC at position 20 among 4000 Colleges. Not only does this bear testimony to the vibrant academic atmosphere of the College but also reveals KMC’s potential to achieve greater heights. The readiness with which KMC has embraced the latest in technology is commendable. Digitalization has been incorporated in the functioning of the library. Some of the key features in the process of digitalization already at work in the library are: usage of smart cards, installation of chip technology in books, installation of a self-issue and self return kiosk, online access of the library’s catalogue through the College website, and the transmission of SMS-alert to students whenever new books are procured by the library. These facilities have made the library more accessible and academically conducive. Another one of our proud achievements has been the construction of a completely disabled - friendly campus. In 2017, the College held its first ever ‘Sakshamta Diwas’ wherein the talents of our differently-abled students were celebrated. On this occasion, to facilitate the movements of our physically challenged members, the lifts of the main building and the library building were inaugurated by the Chairperson, Professor Amitabh Mattoo. We have also successfully completed the construction of a permanent stage behind the Staff Room in the Canteen grounds. The renovation of the Staff Room is going on in full swing and will soon reach completion. We’re also working on the project of the construction of an elevator in the Science Wing. It is with great pleasure that I share with you the excellent job carried out by the College Placement Cell. 86 students of ours have already got jobs in prestigious companies through our Campus Placement drive. Another outstanding venture in this academic year was marked as year of record sports laurels that includes 108 medals and championships in 13 different sports in men and women categories at Inter-college, State, Inter- University, National and International levels. The Annual Report booklet is already in your hands. As you turn the pages, you will become aware of the activities that the Societies and College Departments were engaged in during 2017-18, and you will observe with pride the achievements of our students and faculty members. Indeed, our students have won accolades on all fronts—in academics, in sports, and in other extracurricular activities. 4 ANNUAL REPORT 2017-2018 WWW.KMCOLLEGE.AC.IN Our achievements in 2017-18 have been many, but we must not rest on our laurels. An important project that needs our immediate attention is the construction of the long-awaited College Auditorium, the Frank Thakur Das Memorial Auditorium. The College had initiated a fund-raising drive and civil work on the auditorium will soon commence. However, much more needs to be done on this front. I assure you that we will not be deterred by this challenge. Another project, perhaps not as intimidating as the construction of the auditorium, but nevertheless essential in its own way, is the crèche facility on the College campus which we are planning to introduce for the benefit of the teaching and non-teaching staff. To give a tangible form to our future plans, we need the support and encouragement of the members of the Governing Body and that of the entire staff. For their constant guidance and motivation so far, I express my gratitude to our esteemed Governing Body Members, and especially to our Chairperson, Prof. Amitabh Mattoo. Our manifold achievements in the academic year 2017- 18 would not have been otherwise possible. I would also like to thank you, my dear colleagues and staff members, for the indefatigable zeal and dedication with which you all have been tirelessly working to make this College a premier institution of education. We’ll continue to develop the infrastructure of our College but as the true wealth of a college lies in its teaching faculty, we will endeavour to attract and absorb the best available talents. Like the tall Ashok trees that frame the College building, let us remain steadfast and committed in our pursuit of excellence and truth. As Jacques Derrida, one of the leading thinkers of our time, strongly asserts, and I quote, “The University professes the truth and that is its profession.” This search for truth in all spheres will continue to guide and inspire us always. In our journey towards excellence and truth, there are many more milestones that have to be crossed, but I am absolutely certain that together we will resolutely, unflinchingly move on and take the College to even greater heights. Thank you very much! ANNUAL REPORT 2017-2018 5 KIRORI MAL COLLEGE CONTENTS Academic Awards (Students) - 09 Crème de la Crème @ KMC - 15 Academic Achievements (Faculty Members) - 17 1.
